Alright, heres the story.  A buddy got a really crappy condition house from his gma last year and I was helping him clean it out as she was a massive packrat and I probably spent a good 4-5 weeks of time out there.

So this summer he's looking to get into the demo and the real work of fixing it up and remodeling it.  Thing is I've kept telling him, go get a loan for 40k so he can buy the damn materials and get some actual work done but to my knowledge he's dragging his feet so he has a small budget to fix like one room and he'll probably run out of cash.

I currently don't need any help on anything but am I just being a jerk by not entirely wanting to help him do all his "dirty" work although I probably have nothing going on and could help him?

Should I expect him to help me with any projects I have coming up like building a deck or whatever?

Last summer I was doing it to be a nice guy and this summer I'd help because I'm a nice guy but its starting to get to feel like he needs to step up and get serious and get a loan or I'm just pussy footing around wasting my time on something when I could be doing something else?

I just know in the past I've let friends kind of walk on me and its starting to feel that way a bit, like he's using me as drive for himself to work on this because I know he'd be dragging probably more so if he didn't have my help.

So am I breaking dude law or ???

By Dina Bass

March 12 (Bloomberg) -- Apple Inc. awarded Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook a one-time bonus of $5 million and 75,000 restricted shares for filling in while Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs was on medical leave.

The board’s compensation committee unanimously approved a recommendation by Jobs to make the award, Cupertino, California- based Apple said today in a filing. Half of the restricted stock will be available to him on March 10, 2011, with the rest vesting a year later, assuming Cook stays with the company.

Cook was in charge of day-to-day operations at Apple between Jan. 14 and June 29 last year. Jobs, a cancer survivor, had a liver transplant during that time. While Cook was at the helm, Apple earnings topped analysts’ estimates in two straight quarters. The company also introduced a new version of the iPhone.

Apple rose $1.10 to $226.60 today on the Nasdaq Stock Market. The shares have climbed 7.5 percent this year. At today’s price, Cook’s shares would be worth almost $17 million.

This is one reason I don't buy a lot of big expansive tech stuff anymore because the $500 or whatever for the iphone goes right into the pockets of the 20 or so sitting around the table on the 50th floor.  Seeing crap like this makes me NOT want to give them my business although I know this happens everywhere.

Someone tell me why the fuck the average worker doesn't get paid more??

I know why they don't, I'm just bitching.  Sick of seeing only a select few get rewards off the sweat of others brows.

Political Opinions / Re: Getting an education
« on: March 12, 2010, 07:49:28 PM »
Thats more or less my opinion.  I'm not looking to learn stuff thats not needed at their trying to get me to take.  People looking for construction supervisor could care less if you have a degree, they want the experience, I have experience but want some more management style education.  I wouldn't see why they wouldn't let people get the education they want as long as they get the money but I don't know the technicalities of it.  I'll probably just have to talk to someone at the school but wondering if anyone here knows about this kind of thing.

Political Opinions / Getting an education
« on: March 12, 2010, 03:48:25 PM »
So I'm currently going to college.  I'm currently in construction field supervision and I question if I should've choose this one as the instructor and program is a bit lame but I've started it and going to see how it goes.

The point though is that some of the classes they require are a bit of a waste or joke IMHO like the one I'm taking is online and all the instructor does is say do the questions on page 10, read discussion question 1 and respond on the forum.  He doesn't really give feedback and his emails are nearly next to worthless.

I know of pre-req's and this "degree" has no pre-req's really.  My deal is I don't want to take the worthless classes that I *know* I won't use in the job(as I've had experience in the field) so I don't plan on getting a full degree, I just want the education.

So I'm wondering if anyone here actually knows if a school can refuse to give you classes based on the fact you don't want to take other classes or won't graduate with a degree?

When I look at a genre and really get into a genre I usually end up digging into it and learning more about it and just get an attempt to stimulate some more action around here I'm wondering what you all think would be some of histories most influential pieces would be?

For this thread I'd keep it limited to this century.

All genre's are open for debate but when I thought of this I was thinking about books in particular.

I'm wondering who were the trendsetters that defined a genre, etc.

Like I've read that Sci-Fi didn't exist before HG Wells.  It was called science fantasy before him.

His feet are just to long so the joint has to be his knee.

Thoughts?

5) I NEVER welcome new people because they rarely stick around past 10 posts or so

Why is that?

It took me like 4 years to get 50 posts to post to the hardware thread.  Back in the day there were like 2 posts I REALLY wanted to post to but I didn't want to spam posts since I'm not a one sentence kind of poster and I went away.

Now I'm back until I get bored again because I'm bored and have cabin fever and nothing else to do.

Carrot, this forum is really a unique forum I think because nearly everyone here knows everyone else(or so it seems) and most threads are like chess games played by mail.

Ever played either of the System Shock's?  Those were awesome games.  Also highly recommend Planescape: Torment which is based off planescape setting of D&D and it actually made me want to play table top D&D.  I get bored of the same old Forgotten Realms settings.  Never got to far into Neverwinter nights but heard those are good.

Torchlight is pretty sweet too.  Its like Diablo I guess but I've never played Diablo long term, only demo'd.  Wasn't my bag baby.

I've gotten away from gaming the last few years.

PS3 or Xbox 360?

I hear xbox is more shooters and PS is more action / puzzles?

For Better or For Worse what you are thinking of?

Thats the one.  Like two years ago the kids in the strip were 30's and married and now they are just kids and I can't recall the best but I swear that the art got way worse then it was before the re-do.  possibly like someone else took the strip over...

Kind of like some new bitch is doing Dear Abbey.

Lac, I've always had it in my brain to do a comic for awhile and I've gotten a couple done but I can't draw worth a crap and I refuse to do a stick figure comic.

If anyone at all gives a crap you can see my non-updated comic at http://coatedinsugar.com.

I stopped doing it because I wanted to tell a story and do less one shots.  I have a ton of pictures lined up to use though.

I do like the World of Warcraft ones though.

I can't really stand Family Circus either.  Little Billy and fam can die a horrible death by mutilation from an axe rapist who fooled his dotted line home.

Also I'm fascinated by the idea of a comic 'starting over' like what one comic I saw did.

I forget the name of the strip but it is one of the few where the family ages..  I can't check because my paper replaced it.

I saw the last strip though and the author got to a point that the grandparents were dying or something and everyone was old and had their own families and she just said at the end that she was essentially starting the whole deal over again so everyone will be young again tomorrow.

I find it really odd that a cartoonist can get away with that.  Its like saying they've run out of stories and want a free do over.

I'm glad my paper replaced them but the one they replaced it with also sucks...  /facepalm

Entertainment / Hollywood movies follow a mathematical formula Article
« on: February 19, 2010, 08:00:41 PM »
I don't know, I happened on this link and thought it was interesting, figured someone here might too..

http://www.physorg.com/news185781475.html

(PhysOrg.com) -- Hollywood movies have found a mathematical formula that lets them match the effects of their shots to the attention spans of their audiences.

Psychologist Professor James Cutting and his team from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, analyzed 150 high-grossing Hollywood films released from 1935 to 2005 and discovered the shot lengths in the more recent movies followed the same mathematical pattern that describes the human attention span. The pattern was derived by scientists at the University of Texas in Austin in the 1990s who studied the attention spans of subjects performing hundreds of trials. The team then converted the measurements of their attention spans into wave forms using a mathematical technique known as the Fourier transform.

They found that the magnitude of the waves increased as their frequency decreased, a pattern known as pink noise, or 1/f fluctuation, which means that attention spans of the same lengths recurred at regular intervals. The same pattern has been found by Benoit Mandelbrot (the chaos theorist) in the annual flood levels of the Nile, and has been seen by others in air turbulence, and also in music.

Cutting made his discovery by measuring the length of every shot in 150 comedy, drama and action films, and then converted the measurements into waves for every movie. He found that the more recent the films were, the more likely they were to obey the 1/f fluctuation, and this did not just apply to fast action movies. Cutting said the significant thing is that shots of similar lengths recur in a regular pattern through the film.

Cutting believes obeying the 1/f law makes films “resonate with the rhythm of human attention spans,” and this makes them more gripping. Films edited in this way would then tend to be more successful and the style of shooting and editing more likely to be copied. Films of Cutting’s own favourite genre, the Film Noir, do not generally follow the 1/f law, with shot lengths tending to be more random. By contrast The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and the 2005 blockbuster movie Star Wars Episode III (which Cutting considers to be “just dreadful”) both follow 1/f rigidly.

The researchers concluded that over the next few decades film makers may take more care to follow the 1/f law to try to boost audience engagement.

DOI:10.1177/0956797610361679 . Full text of the paper is available here ( http://people.psych.cornell.edu/~jec7/pubs/cuttingetalpsychsci10.pdf ).

Finally!  A Blondie comic that is actually a fraction of a bit funny.

I'm saddened by today's comics page.  The local paper has around 20 comics and about 2 of those are actually good.

And can someone explain to me why the H is Charlie Brown still allowed in papers?  There needs to be a time limit allowed on things like that.  He might have been funny and relevant back in the 50's but not anymore.  If the author's not putting out anything anymore the strip should be stopped...

... unless your Calvin'n'Hobbes or Far Side.

I could stab so many comic authors because of them lameness...   :|
