Alright, heres the story.  A buddy got a really crappy condition house from his gma last year and I was helping him clean it out as she was a massive packrat and I probably spent a good 4-5 weeks of time out there.

So this summer he's looking to get into the demo and the real work of fixing it up and remodeling it.  Thing is I've kept telling him, go get a loan for 40k so he can buy the damn materials and get some actual work done but to my knowledge he's dragging his feet so he has a small budget to fix like one room and he'll probably run out of cash.

I currently don't need any help on anything but am I just being a jerk by not entirely wanting to help him do all his "dirty" work although I probably have nothing going on and could help him?

Should I expect him to help me with any projects I have coming up like building a deck or whatever?

Last summer I was doing it to be a nice guy and this summer I'd help because I'm a nice guy but its starting to get to feel like he needs to step up and get serious and get a loan or I'm just pussy footing around wasting my time on something when I could be doing something else?

I just know in the past I've let friends kind of walk on me and its starting to feel that way a bit, like he's using me as drive for himself to work on this because I know he'd be dragging probably more so if he didn't have my help.

So am I breaking dude law or ???

(Adds timing of leave in third paragraph.)

By Dina Bass

March 12 (Bloomberg) -- Apple Inc. awarded Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook a one-time bonus of $5 million and 75,000 restricted shares for filling in while Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs was on medical leave.

The board’s compensation committee unanimously approved a recommendation by Jobs to make the award, Cupertino, California- based Apple said today in a filing. Half of the restricted stock will be available to him on March 10, 2011, with the rest vesting a year later, assuming Cook stays with the company.

Cook was in charge of day-to-day operations at Apple between Jan. 14 and June 29 last year. Jobs, a cancer survivor, had a liver transplant during that time. While Cook was at the helm, Apple earnings topped analysts’ estimates in two straight quarters. The company also introduced a new version of the iPhone.

Apple rose $1.10 to $226.60 today on the Nasdaq Stock Market. The shares have climbed 7.5 percent this year. At today’s price, Cook’s shares would be worth almost $17 million.

This is one reason I don't buy a lot of big expansive tech stuff anymore because the $500 or whatever for the iphone goes right into the pockets of the 20 or so sitting around the table on the 50th floor.  Seeing crap like this makes me NOT want to give them my business although I know this happens everywhere.

Someone tell me why the fuck the average worker doesn't get paid more??

I know why they don't, I'm just bitching.  Sick of seeing only a select few get rewards off the sweat of others brows.

Political Opinions / Getting an education
« on: March 12, 2010, 03:48:25 PM »
So I'm currently going to college.  I'm currently in construction field supervision and I question if I should've choose this one as the instructor and program is a bit lame but I've started it and going to see how it goes.

The point though is that some of the classes they require are a bit of a waste or joke IMHO like the one I'm taking is online and all the instructor does is say do the questions on page 10, read discussion question 1 and respond on the forum.  He doesn't really give feedback and his emails are nearly next to worthless.

I know of pre-req's and this "degree" has no pre-req's really.  My deal is I don't want to take the worthless classes that I *know* I won't use in the job(as I've had experience in the field) so I don't plan on getting a full degree, I just want the education.

So I'm wondering if anyone here actually knows if a school can refuse to give you classes based on the fact you don't want to take other classes or won't graduate with a degree?

Entertainment / Most influencial work, outside religion???

When I look at a genre and really get into a genre I usually end up digging into it and learning more about it and just get an attempt to stimulate some more action around here I'm wondering what you all think would be some of histories most influential pieces would be?

For this thread I'd keep it limited to this century.

All genre's are open for debate but when I thought of this I was thinking about books in particular.

I'm wondering who were the trendsetters that defined a genre, etc.

Like I've read that Sci-Fi didn't exist before HG Wells.  It was called science fantasy before him.

Entertainment / Hollywood movies follow a mathematical formula Article
« on: February 19, 2010, 08:00:41 PM »
I don't know, I happened on this link and thought it was interesting, figured someone here might too..

http://www.physorg.com/news185781475.html

(PhysOrg.com) -- Hollywood movies have found a mathematical formula that lets them match the effects of their shots to the attention spans of their audiences.

Psychologist Professor James Cutting and his team from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, analyzed 150 high-grossing Hollywood films released from 1935 to 2005 and discovered the shot lengths in the more recent movies followed the same mathematical pattern that describes the human attention span. The pattern was derived by scientists at the University of Texas in Austin in the 1990s who studied the attention spans of subjects performing hundreds of trials. The team then converted the measurements of their attention spans into wave forms using a mathematical technique known as the Fourier transform.

They found that the magnitude of the waves increased as their frequency decreased, a pattern known as pink noise, or 1/f fluctuation, which means that attention spans of the same lengths recurred at regular intervals. The same pattern has been found by Benoit Mandelbrot (the chaos theorist) in the annual flood levels of the Nile, and has been seen by others in air turbulence, and also in music.

Cutting made his discovery by measuring the length of every shot in 150 comedy, drama and action films, and then converted the measurements into waves for every movie. He found that the more recent the films were, the more likely they were to obey the 1/f fluctuation, and this did not just apply to fast action movies. Cutting said the significant thing is that shots of similar lengths recur in a regular pattern through the film.

Cutting believes obeying the 1/f law makes films “resonate with the rhythm of human attention spans,” and this makes them more gripping. Films edited in this way would then tend to be more successful and the style of shooting and editing more likely to be copied. Films of Cutting’s own favourite genre, the Film Noir, do not generally follow the 1/f law, with shot lengths tending to be more random. By contrast The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and the 2005 blockbuster movie Star Wars Episode III (which Cutting considers to be “just dreadful”) both follow 1/f rigidly.

The researchers concluded that over the next few decades film makers may take more care to follow the 1/f law to try to boost audience engagement.

Entertainment / FINALLY!!
« on: February 19, 2010, 07:53:30 PM »
Finally!  A Blondie comic that is actually a fraction of a bit funny.

I'm saddened by today's comics page.  The local paper has around 20 comics and about 2 of those are actually good.

And can someone explain to me why the H is Charlie Brown still allowed in papers?  There needs to be a time limit allowed on things like that.  He might have been funny and relevant back in the 50's but not anymore.  If the author's not putting out anything anymore the strip should be stopped...

... unless your Calvin'n'Hobbes or Far Side.

I could stab so many comic authors because of them lameness...   :|

Anarchy / Can I get your professional opinions on someones work?
« on: February 10, 2010, 09:31:29 PM »
So I'm taking an anthropology class and as part of an assignment we had to reply to others assignments on a discussion thing.  We had to answer a couple questions that the teacher posted.

Question 1:  What would your response be if your relatives(or ancestors) were dug up to make way for a road?
Question 2:  If you were the one in charge of everything(the road crew, contacting state offices and relatives and scientists to study the bones) how would you prioritize things?

So I was reading through peoples responses and came across this little beauty and just wondering what you guys think of it.  Honesty please.  I just want to know if my gut feeling is right or wrong on how I feel about it but I think I should follow my gut.  =)

Discussion Questions

1.   If deceased relatives of mine were displaced by a road grader during the development of a highway, I might cringe.  The irony of the situation would be numbing; a place of eternal rest may ease the mind of those who visit, a highway could never resemble such a place.  Highways to modern Americans, folks which necessitate the existence of highways themselves, are looked on with despair and frustration.  Highway traffic is a loud and constant source of noise pollution.  How can a person’s prayers to the dead compare to noise pollution?  One cannot see noise anymore than one may see a dead relative inside of a tomb underground.
Still, progress makes progress.  One who hates highways because interred relatives were cast aside by a bull-dozer during the highway’s construction may offer a refreshing aspect on hatred of highways.  Because highways might represent noise to urban dwellers, who then hate highways, may gravitate to a rural type who connects directly (by the relatives’ un-interment) with such a permanent, sterile, inhuman, immovable manifestation of American culture.
On the other hand, the highway development plan may come of a design by karma.  Envision a family very social, very political, and very influential in the ancient past.  Perhaps this family originated a profound type of religion.  Perhaps the family in mind were independent thinkers, scientific types during time prior of the agricultural revolution.  Perhaps they knew a terrific recipe for fried-chicken.  In any-case, respected, loved, feared, or admired, the highway should not pass anywhere except over their gravesite.  The spot those bones rested for thousands of years leaked fumes of success, joy, whatever, and anyone who drove over the spot at which they rested may find the same terrific experiences the ancestors in question invented, if desired.
Further still, roads are roads.  The ancient folks of Pueblo Bonita knew the trigonometry needed to build a straight road.  Modern Americans know how to build them too, except with more curves which add scenic perspectives from a quickly moving vehicle.  All the same, if the ones who built the first roads walked, the road necessitated straightness.
Imagine a time with wide expanses of time, the earth a place of invention; an original human.  Of course things changed, original invention undertaken in the basement may still take place, with some limitations.  If my relatives’ remains shifted in the soil, then sifted through gigantic machinery which design roads, it would probably only come because of ignorance of the location of the gravesite.    The dense irony of the situation would make me feel numb.

2.   The project must reach completion, and I know the way to complete it.  The desires of several parties must get satisfied.  The family of the interred relatives, the contractors designing the road, the state offices which find special labor for the project, and the desires of fellow scientists need to know they are all working together on the project (road).  Again, the project does not belong to them; it belongs to me.  They just need to know of the presence of one another so they can use each other when necessary.   For example, the state offices alert a contractor’s union special labor called “Archeologists” would work on the site; prepare for, or hire, some.  The contractor’s union may reply, “Why, Jerks?”  To which the State would reply, “Because, of the demands of such-and-such a group.”  By knowing the structure of an excavation effort toes would not get stepped on, fewer feelings would get hurt.
So, the tricky part:  Notifying who cares about who’s in the ground about what will cover the ground after the project finishes.  How might one begin finding the appropriate nation of people a gravesite will be paved over with two feet of limestone gravel, steel re-bar, and concrete?  This may take a while without the help of a few state offices, perhaps within which anthropologists may exist.  If I may find an archeologist, a biological anthropologist, a cultural anthropologist, or an interpreter I would immediately ask him/her to begin a file on our project. I would then command, “Contact folks who may have relatives in-ground, or who might know of folks with relatives in-ground and where those folks may be found.  Then alert these particular folks to the urgency of the situation!”  If no anthropologists exist, I would quickly begin to invent a new science; I would have much work to do before the road could go down.
Assuming the scientist(s) available well versed in Native American culture and reach a point of interest in three dimensional spaces, the gravesites would resolve their hidden locations to the mystical relatives.  The relatives portray the locations to the archeologist of the State, who would begin the systematic destruction of the gravesite.
I expect labor would patiently watch, everyday, until the excavation reached completion to the satisfaction of the pleasant relative(s) of the bones.  After, the road with cars on it would be hex free.  All parties involved could come together, with some food to share, and speak about the experience we shared with one another.

(EDIT: Typo, best fixed or face severe ridicule by the jury.  =P )

Anarchy / Looking for some advice on a site design..
« on: January 09, 2007, 07:45:26 PM »
Awhile ago I drew up what I wanted my site to be.  Basically an all around site for everything about me.  Blogs are one sided as they are journals.  I want to share my picture collection, my favourite files, have a forum, have my blog, have a place to host my "projects", make a webcomic or three, have a place for movies.

http://doomedtoreality.com/files/Website/sitemap.jpg

I also added a type of theme I wouldn't mind having(the tribal looking one).  I'm wondering which theme would be best to make this off of or how to get the image behind the menu system if on sidebar?

I'm familiar enough with drupal(ran it and setup a few times) to know it can do all this.  I'm just wondering yours all opinion on having a site LIKE this and how well a CMS could handle this.

My main problem is setting up section homepages where they look a bit different and not just have the entire site a ton of links to every other section.  Ideally I'd want it looking SORT of http://weareall.doomedtoreality.com/drupal5/ .  I'm don't like having a "normal" website, with side navigation, and white backgrounds.

My other problem is I'd hope in setting this system up it'd be simple to keep track of and not hard to find something to edit it.

Well, I'm basically wondering your opinions on having an all encompassing site related to things about me, where as I could run a lot of this stuff on separate domains specialized to its thing.  Like the webcomic, I'd want that to stand out, and it could have its own domain, but how would I make it stand out as a "speciality" to that site?

Just still mashing over this stuff in my head.

Hopefully the image works, or just "view image" or something.

Anarchy / What do you think of my site?
« on: December 31, 2006, 09:35:15 PM »
I'm building a test site at http://weareall.doomedtoreality.com/drupal5/ and I'm looking for opinions before I build the actual production one.

This one is by no means finished or fine tuned but its the basic over all layout and scheme I'm looking at and wondering what people think.

I'm looking at hosting a webcomic, my massive collection of art(that I've stolen from all over the net), my blog, videos and when the module comes out, some files and a forum.

I could always go for the more generic website look with standard left nav menu, content, other crap but I hate the generic white websites of nowdays, theres no variety or color.  I've always liked dark schemes and I actually like that front page.  I need to put somewhere though what the sites about and I'd want to find a way to emphasis the webcomic more then the other stuff..

I could maybe make 2 galleries and one dedicated to the comic and the other to the collection...  hmm, thats not a bad idea..

BTW, I'd fancy it up, but do you think that logo thing is fairly lame and I should make a more graphical one?

Anyways, if you want to take a look and critique I'd mucho appreciateo it.

Thanks.

PS - Whats the post # to post in tech at this point? 100 yet or 50?

Political Opinions / Stolen Anti-Matter question
« on: December 28, 2006, 07:57:25 PM »
I stole this from a sweet little comic I saw which I don't know the name of.

If antimatter is the opposite of matter in this dimension, then if you take anti-hydrogen and anti-oxygen could you make anti-water?  And in the anti-verse could you then create fire with the anti-water?

Political Opinions / What would happen if....
« on: December 28, 2006, 07:46:11 PM »
What do you all think would happen if humanity found out that some crucial part of our existence(example; computers) caused cancer?

I realize this has already happened times over with other things like lead paint and such stuff, but I was just thinking and that thought popped into my head because EVERYONE uses computers which means like 90% of the world population would die from it.

There would be fallout.

I guess the question I might be really wanting to ask is.. 2 parter..  Could humanity go back to the way it was before computers?  Then, were we better off without computers in the first place?

I see the internet as brining us more together as a world because I've talked with people from all over the place and they were mostly pretty cool(when will that word get outdated?) but I feel its making the world move to fast.  I don't have a high tech job but still I feel the buzz, people rushing.

I dunno where I'm going...  Just thought I'd post a thought or 5.

Entertainment / Know any kick ass magazines to subscribe to?
« on: December 07, 2006, 06:23:27 PM »
I've been trying to think of christmas presents to ask for and something I like doing is reading magazines.

Well, there just so happens to be a FREAKING ton of them out there and I'm wondering if anyone out there knows any decent ones to check out?

I'm looking at almost all categories... Not so much news though because I kinda hate news mags like Newsweek, Time, etc. I'm looking more for science, gaming, anime, travel, how-to, and any just interesting ones.

These are a few I know of;

http://www.t3.co.uk/ - UK nosehair clipper zine - Spendy to import
http://www.nationalgeographic.com/adventure/ - Nat Geo Adventure
http://www.discover.com/ - Science
http://www.howdesign.com/ - Some one I found
http://www.popsci.com/popsci/ - Popular Science
http://makezine.com/ - DIY type,6ish/year and spendy

I also picked up a copy of Mental_floss and I LOVE that one. Quite quite good and full of interesting stuff, but only 6ish/year again which sucks.

I'm NOT a fan of PC Gaming(I feel they lack) so don't suggest them. Razz
I do kinda of like Wizard but not that much really, just a lot of filler articles.

I'm looking for good science reads, and ones that are credible not just rumor gossip psuedo-science. I think Discover, American Science? and a couple others that are actually used among the scientist crowd where people publish findings, but I also like plain english stuff too.

Any got ideas?

Anarchy / What are the main story types??
« on: September 16, 2006, 03:20:39 PM »
This may belong in my other post  but I wanted to make it its own post.

I either read or heard somewhere that there are 6 main types of stories in the world and all stories are based off the concepts of those main types. (BTW, I read comics) After some thinking about this and thinking about all the comics I've read and skimming through the book on upcoming stuff I think I agree with this. All the stories from video games, books, comics, etc seem to be based off a very basic plot.

So far my list is:

      Love story
      Betrayl / Revenge
Quest(hero kills monster, hero has to save or get something)
      Theme type(horror, comedy, crime, etc)
      Wrongfully accused
      History of something
      Finding yourself(possibly part of quest)

Those are the better ones of the ones I got. Think of all the stories and things that have stories. Get back to the very root of the plot, guy loves girl, guy saves town, outcast seeks revenge......

Do you know of any others that could work on the list as I'm sure there are more.

Also, on a side note, which do you think makes for the best type of story?? Personally I probably favour the revenge with a touch of finding yourself as it sets up the villian and gives sympathy to the revenge seeker and makes it easier to connect with them. Thats just me though.

Political Opinions / What drives a person truly insane??
« on: September 16, 2006, 03:17:30 PM »
Awhile ago I wanted to start writing short stories, just for something to do. I sat and wondered about what kind of stories and have always found myself really enjoying first person narrative. So I picked horror as I feel that could best be done in that manner. Once I picked horror I started trying to think of and make a list of all the things that could drive a man truly insane or just make him lose his mind.. I talking truly.. Not just like lost my keys and I'm pretty pissed.. I'm talking truly make him wacked out of his gourd, talking to himself, possibly multi-personality disorder.

So far my list includes:

Being hunted
executed
tortured
exploring ruins(ala HP Lovecraft style)
the unknown
getting lost
"the rage"
being dissected
being trapped in the darkness, losing your mind, then being found
being forced to kill
be experimented on
insomnia
isolation
mindfu!k
guilt
jealousy
your own past

That is my current list. A couple you may not understand because they are my own terms for something, but I think you may get the jist.

Let me know if you think of any other ones.  Which do you think may be the strongest factors?

Just wondering opinions.  Does life imitate art or does art imitate life??

I ask this because I think if you look at society art can have a large influence on peoples daily lives, but being the artist and looking at the lives of people can help you create your art...

Anyone following this lineup??

What do you think about it?  How do you think it might end?

I found it odd they didn't do this registration thing earlier.  I think Tony Stark is being the biggest ass in the Marvel Continunity...

I honestly don't think about much how comic stories will end, I just like reading the tales that are woven.  I don't follow big news or read articles on comic gossip like I probably should.  One of my friends tells me someones going to die in Civil War, but not sure its true..

Entertainment / Opinion on the Simpsons (Movie)
« on: September 12, 2006, 04:50:30 PM »
Just wondering everyones opinions on what they think of the Simpsons movie?

I don't follow the news, but did read a couple things that a trialer was released at some comic con that shows some people trying to kill Homer or something and Grandpa busting in and saying he might be part of the mob.... or something....

This is just my opinion, but I really really hope that the movie is a lot better then the episodes have been the last few years.

Since about 2001 I have stopped regularly watching the Simpsons because I feel they've gone weak.  The stories aren't there anymore.  I think they should've done a movie a long time ago.

I've always wanted to see the McBain movie(that clips are shown of, like twice) done for a movie.

I'd like to see them go back to their roots, get rid of the celeb drop-ins, and have some kind of moral like they used to.

I really hope the movie achieves this, but I have a bad feeling it won't...

Opinions?

I just thought I'd drop a thread after I pricked my finger with the needle..  HAHAHA... oooo k..

Anyways, the name is Joe.

I'm from the widwest US and I'm extremely bored and sick of it here.  I've been in search of a real kick ass forum to regular for awhile.  I still haven't quite found it.  I'm trying to make my own forum but its not working the greatest..

I'm a nerd/geek and I(mostly) like to have conversations that mean stuff.  I'm a pro in nothing and a dabbler in everything.

I seek inspiration and people that I feel are my equals, not people that demean me by talking smarter to sound smarter or some such.

I hope to create something, what the something is I'm not quite sure yet.  A webcomic, an internet community for colloboration on projects, or something else I haven't thought of it.

I want to create a better world but am currently drowning in it.  I am ashamed of my government, I make almost minimum wage and have hope.  Its not a good combonation because I feel my hope is being crushed because of the government and society as a whole, the way its turning out, the way its being run.  I'm worried about the future.

I want to inspire people.  I want to help people.

I want to meet people and create friendships.  I want to learn other cultures, go other places, learn things I did not know.

My name is Joe.

Hello to you, I say.

Entertainment / Best landmark ... or other texts/books??
« on: September 11, 2006, 09:11:48 PM »
I've been wanting to read up on some landmark texts(like Origin of Species, Principia, etc) and am wondering if anyone has read any?  I'm looking for entertainment, as in something that actually holds my interest and isn't all boring science talk..  like REAL BORING science talk..

I'm also wondering any other good texts anyone would like to point out..

I heard The Art of Deception is good but haven't gotten around to getting a copy.

I also want to get the entire collection of Foxtrot comics for my cereal time in the morning..

Suggestions?

Political Opinions / Should the world be run by one system?
« on: September 11, 2006, 09:07:36 PM »
Do you think the world should be run by one governmental system instead of all these seperate countries and nations?  Then as one entity(the world) we could allocate resources to where they need to be and re-arrange things a bit to be more suited to peaceful relations..

I'm just wondering how to achieve this..

I've lurked here for a bit before I signed up.  I've now signed up and read some more posts and such.  I'm wondering how many active members actually come here?  I see a lot of repeat from the same people  ???

I'm also wondering if its regular for the admin/mods to edit and ban users and users posts?

I'm wondering if your control freaks or ??  I understand the spam and such, but this seems, at least to me, to be a heavily moderated forum..

Still trying to get my feel if I like it or not..
