Sounds about right.

Particularly if the get the Minnesota Department of Public Safety and MN Department of Transportation to be in charge of administration of such things.

scary thought, increased by the fact that, realistically, it could happen.

I disagree.  We're seeing 2 phenomena here: the first being the governmental erosion of extended civil liberties, and the other being a public backlash about the same.  I predict that things will get a little bit worse, but that within the next 10 years the pendulum should start swinging back toward where it ought to be.

As long as we continue the backlash, things will even out before it gets that bad.

I'm almost willing to bet the opposite.  The pendullum already peaked on the end of the people.  We're just getting started.  many people have already voiced the fact that they'd gladly give up rights and lberties granted to them through the bill of rights and the U. S. Constitution if it was needed to keep them "safe".  We went from alcohol and gay rights to Political correctness and a move at a federal ban on homosexual marriage.  The pendulum swings, but not quite in the direction you had thought..... and it will probably be caught and held by the government once they have it where they want it.

I'll take this from another perspective: Americans are just fuckin lazy enough that they would see this as a good idea. "Implanting a chip in my skin so I don't hafta carry ID or expend the energy to sign my name? I'm SO there!"
