Hm. That doesn't sound very typical to me. You should make your normal.dot file read only, and it should not be eating up resources or asking you to rename it or save changes to it unless you're doing something intentionally to alter it.
There are lots and lots and LOTS of viruses out there, however, that are specifically targetted toward Microsoft Word. I've done battle with quite a few of them, mostly the "CONCEPT" viruses and other variants, but there are fricken millions of them. There are lots of Excel virii out there too... be careful and scan all .DOC's, .DOT's and .XLS's before opening anything like that. Seriously, I mean it. I'm an extremely careful person when it comes to things like that, and I STILL pick up the occasional Word or Excel virus. Fortunately, I take precautions that help keep them from spreading to other documents (like making my normal.dot read-only, and a similar step for Excel), but I can tell you... they're out there, and they spread like crazy.
You should run a scan. Be paranoid when it comes to MS documents, because they spread like wildfire, and most of the time you won't even know you have them until most of the documents on your computer are infected (along with any new ones that you open too).
