Clerks 2 and the Donkey Show
« on: July 24, 2006, 12:45:39 AM »

I saw Clerks 2 the other night with my girlfriend, and wanted to let you all know that for the first time in several years I didn't throw away my money at the movie theater. The movie was defiantly worth the money spent, and was probably one of the funniest I have seen in a long time.

Plus, the movie was supposed to have taken place right around where I live. They even make references to the community college that I attend.

I saw Clerks 2 last night and laughed my ass off. The people at the movie theatre were quick to summon medical professionals, and they were able to reattach my ass.

I was very worried going in that Smith was falling apart.  After all, when he made "Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back" it was with the idea that it was a wrap for those characters.  I was concerned that he was just treading old ground in a vain attempt at regaining some pride after that steamer "Jersey Girl."  Notice the past tense.  Go see the movie.  It's one of the only one's I've ever seen that was worth the $10.  If you want to have some major fun take that super religious Jesus loving person at work.  Guaranteed you'll have 2 weeks minimum without a visit from them.  As my born again friend said, "That movie will haunt my dreams until the day I die."  HA!

I think this movie looks really funny but I for some reason have never seen the first one and would like to hear your opinion if I should actually rent the first one befor I see this in theaters.

If you haven't seen Clerks yet, I'm morally required to poke you in the left eyeball with a fountain pen.

*poke*

Now go buy, not rent, BUY "Clerks" before I am forced to take further action.

Clerks was without doubt the best movie ever. I plan to scour the world, searching for the real life equivalent of Randal. I will then marry him and bear his children (or rape him and store him in my closet).

But the real question is, Did Kevin Smith reclaim his direction or did Jersey Girl sink his career too far?

Well the thing about Clerks 2 is that it's completely untrue to Clerks. Clerks was not written to be funny; Kevin Smith was very surprised at the comedic regard it acquired. But he wrote it to be a realistic drama. Clerks 2 was very obviously written to be funny, not to have intellectual value. So it kicked ass, but it also sucked because you see how Kevin Smith is just submitting to the public.

Do you have a source for this? I watched a significant chunk of the original the other day, and I have a very  hard time believing this to be the case.

Er, yeah...in an interview Kevin Smith did in the late 90's, he said he was shocked that so many people thought the movie was funny. He goes on to state that it wasn't meant to be that way, and he was sort of disappointed, even. In an interview he did more recently he said he'd gotten over that and was happy with Clerks the way it had turned out.

Do you remember the source of either of these interviews? Specifically?

I'd like to read either one.

Well one was a recording, not an article. It may have been on that Win a Night with Kevin Smith DVD. I'm not sure...the other (the first one) was in a magazine, like Rolling Stone or MAD or something like that but I can't remember which one.
