Recommend me a desk
« on: July 25, 2006, 01:57:21 AM »

Simply put, I need a new desk for the office in my store. It has to meet the following requirements:

1. It has the ability to hold more than one tower (I'm shooting for 3) and I'd like to keep them under the work area, if possible. This way there is just a keyboard, monitor, and a mouse on the desk.
2. It won't break after 3 months because water got on it, or there was too much weight on it.
3. Doesn't cost a shit load of money. I'm looking at the 150 range.

I'm guessing it's going to be hard to find a desk that meets all of those requirements. Maybe I'm just better off building one myself.

Sorry, I can't be of help with this one.  I don't use a computer desk at home.  And, I'm in a modular cube at work.

Just buy a regular desk, and add an extra computer cart like this one:

You can probably fit your two extra towers in the cart, stick your printer on top, and stock your paper on the pull out tray.

Aside from being a pain in the ass to assemble without help, Ikea's Jerker seems to fit the bill. They even have little attachments so you can hang computers from the side.

I see you have that desk, or something similar to it in one of your photos... Do you think that hutch can support the weight of two/three towers?

What kind of towers are we talking here? I just pressed down on mine and it's a tad wobbly.

Mid ATX style towers. I'm guessing they're about 25 pounds a piece.

When taking a second glance at the location I need it to be, there isn't really enough room over head because there are two over-head racks that we rent from a third party (So putting the computers in their wall-mounted racks is a no-no) as well as there being a cabinet up there, too. Looks like we're going to have to settle with a normal flat top desk, with some kind of shelf underneath to fit multiple towers. They would go on the floor, but putting them on the floor in a restaurant is the worst idea ever. They might as well be in the middle of a road somewhere.

I'm thinking a home-brew rig would be the best way to go in this case. Probably the cheapest and most durable, yet ugliest.
