I saw my first and only ep of the Ali G show on a return flight from Heathrow back in 2002. I also saw an ep or two of The Office (the original British one) on the same flight. As a barometer of my own preference in such things, upon landing I learned everything I could about The Office and Ricky Gervais et al., and today proudly own the DVD box set of the complete series, including specials. The same cannot be said about the Ali G show. I thought it was funny and outrageous, and I think Sasha Cohen has great talent, but in the end I was more bothered by it than entertained. Watching prudish little old ladies being tricked into discussing anal sex didn't advance the human experience for me. I already know everything there is to know about prudish old ladies and anal sex, and the idea that a juxtaposition of the two might be amusing is pretty obvious. But as it turns out, for me anyway, it's more amusing in the abstract. The same goes with coaxing a barfull of Texans into a chorus of "Throw the Jew Down the Well". Yes, I know it can be done, but it means nothing. What galls me is that some are comparing Cohen with groundbreaking and outrageous (for the time) acts like Lenny Bruce and Richard Pryor. I can't agree. In the hands of Bruce and Pryor and a few others, standup became one of the forces driving societal change. What Cohen does is little more than mean-spirited slapstick.

Anyway, let me know how you like the movie.

ah so now that you've seen the ali G show, maybe you'll get a better appreciation for this article I had done a while back.

Also, I tried to watch the British version of the Office multiple times as I have a friend who's constantly trying to lean me his DVDs of it, but it's too much effort on my part. I just don't get most of the british slang he uses and I don't feel like figuring out what I'm missing. I do love the American version.

I admit I have a leg up on the British Office, because I've been slogging through incomprehensible British accents and slang for years, partly because of a voracious appetite for Britcoms and BBC soaps, and partly because of a string of British friends and co-workers. As for the American version, I watched a few but didn't get hooked. I can see it has its merits. It's certainly not as dark and cynical as the British version.

It's alright, we didn't get in to see it because it was all sold out so we went to see Trailor Park Boys instead, which kicked ass because we're all fans anyway and couldn't remember why we hadn't gone to see that when it opened. We're going to see Borat next weekend, and on an unrelated note I got my ass kicked at air hockey by a drunk friend 6 to 0.

Borat is absolutely great. He is shouldnt be equalled to Ali G; that is another character of Cohen's.

Anyway, I've seen it last Thursday and I laughed and laughed and laughed. I was allready a fan of Borat from his series. I don't want to ruin the fun for you if you still didnt see it, so I'm not going to name particularly hilarious scenes, but some were truly unique.

Wowoweewa!

Cohen is definitely a genius. I've never seen him in a role that didn't make me laugh out loud...have you seen Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby? He's fucking hilarious. <3

I hope all dads joke like that, I think they all should.  I was so embarassed when my dad would bust out the daddy jokes (aka bad puns for those of you playing along at home) in front of my friends when I was little but now I love it.  Such a Daddy's girl.  I also had a boss that was the King of AWFUL Puns (and handlebar mustaches- that's how people identified him, by his mustache) and quite frankly that's a huge part of the reason I stayed at I.T. as long as I did.  Cool boss, cool job.  Shitty pay though, "financial aid" my ass.

I just saw Borat last night...and although it was highly offensive, it was the funniest thing I've ever seen in my life. I have only one complaint: out of all the penises (what IS the plural of penis?) that are shown in the movie, how come SBC's is the only one censored out? WE WANT TO SEE HIS PENIS.

Great success! I just got back from watching Borat and I lol'd so hard I thought I would be thrown out again, possibly even execute. The bear head in the fridge made me spew my Dr Pepper and the old anthem video at the end cracked me up because it looks almost exactly like the old Kim Jong Il videos I was watching earlier...this one is awesome, I may even pay for the DVD with real money!
