The only thing I hate more than the hectic OMG DO IT NOW times here are the absolute dead times, like now. Is it time to go home yet?

Message pops up from coworker (we have an inter-company instant messenger)
"Please check your email, I just sent you a question and I need an answer ASAP."

I HATE that. I get people who e-mail me, IM me, then phone me to tell me about the e-mail they sent. I KNOW! I Have a blackberry and your thing, while it may be important to you, isn't a priority for me as I have other obligations. Hence the lack of response from my part. Fuck I hate it when people do that. I can manage and prioritise my own work load, thank you.

What really gets me is if it's like that for days, or weeks, in a row and then it all just stops suddenly.  You go from 90 mph to a dead stop.  No meetings.  No action items.  No deadlines.  Thank FSM for the internet.

Please explain to me why the EOL of your system is happening in crisis mode!!!??!!!  You knew a year ago that support for the software you're running was going to end at the close of 2007.  How is it possible that you are SO FREAKING UNPREPARED for this that now you're having to EOL a data warehouse in an emergency, last minute fashion?  Bastards.

I've found that many times people will accept just an acknowledgment of their issue in some way.  I'll often reply to an email with something like,...
Quote
Hey Tanya,
I understand the issue and I've put it on my list of items that need to be worked into my current workload.  I'm not sure when I'll be able to give you a definite timeline as to when I'll get to this, but you'll be the second person to know.

Thanks
Pete
Now, working an item into my current workload may be as simple as adding it to my to-do list and I may get to it quicker than they even expected.  Usually not.  A message like this implies that I'm super busy but it at least lets them know that I'm aware that they've peed in their pants and they need to be changed.

Haha, I love some of the posts here.  Good stuff.

Two more work pet-peeves:

1.  Don't call me if you haven't yet figured out what you need to ask.  Formulate your question first, then pick up the phone.  Better yet, use email.

2.  You don't need to set up a meeting with me for a question that can be asked and answered in less than 50 words.

I'm still laughing at the IT workload thing.  We are like that too.   I can't stand sitting here without having work to do.

I like waking up at 3am for work and finally leaving work at around 4pm to eventually go to class from 6 to 9pm, and then afterwards go home and go to sleep for a few hours and wake up in the middle of the night to unload a truck and get home at around 6am.

Some days I have to return for work at 11am for another 9 hours of work and then go home, go to sleep and wake up at 9am for work again the next day.

Yup, I like that.

Shit... I'd rather have them not have a clue what they're going to ask.  Probably 45% of my job is finding out what the customer really needs.  Not what they want, but what they need.  Sure, most of them think they know what they want, but most of the time there's little or no connection to what they need.

"Why?" is the single most important word in my career.
Why do you need this?
Why do you get the inputs in this format?
Why do you send the output in that format?
Why are you using this program?
Why etc., etc., etc.

I learned from a past boss that you need to ask "Why?" five times to get the real answer.
It's worked very well for me as a Business Systems Analyst.

I can't bitch about my (night) job today.  I called in sick.

I CAN, however, bitch about the fact that I'm sick.  Still probably better than night school though.

Yeah, job does imply work and work by definition sucks.  But compared to my last gig, I'm in paradise.

What if we don't have a job?  Because that's kinda sucking ass for me right now when I have bills to pay.

Not working sucks.  I should get a job...

I have a secretarial job. It's not the best job in the world, and my pay was better at the bookstore (but the local store in the chain here wouldn't even talk to me....ugh), but it could be worse.  I have minimal contact with people which means I have no good stories, no people to bitch about, nothing.  I'm not a fan of 4 graduate classes and working about 16 hours/week though.  At least I have 3 day weekends, and maybe one day, one of those days will be just for me, and I can sleep in or something.

I know that feeling. I work on the average of about 55 hours a week and am taking 3 classes right now. I was taking 4 but was forced to drop one of them.

I'm toying with the notion of taking one or two online courses next semester to see if it helps any.

I run my own since 6 months and it is still the best decision I ever made. Downside is I can't complain to the boss anymore.

I put myself through undergrad and grad school working on average 60 hours a week.  Keep it up, the schooling will mean a lot and you can relish the knowledge that you were able to overcome adversity and get it done.
