Do any of you have a associate degree in computer programming. If I get a 2 year degree in programming, should I be able to get a job programming with it.  I do not have any other degree. thank you :slap

I was thinking of getting an Associates degree in either Art History or Studio Art.  Do you think I could get a job as an artist.

No, but you can probably get a job as a computer professional.

So, do you think an associate degree in Computer Programming is a waste?

It depends on what 'waste' modifies.

Do we have to decide right now?

Do you think a person that graduates from a community college with an A.S. Degree in Computer Programming will find employment in that field? Or not?

Sure they could.  Relocation to Bangalore might be necessary though.

Beardo, the truth is you just never know. I've been in the field for 30 years, and have never once been asked whether I have a degree or not.

A recruiter will look for the minimum specs for the job.  So an AS will qualify you for a larger pool of jobs than not having one.

Actually, this is an interesting question.

My gut feeling is that it's more valuable to specialize. Get a Microsoft certification in something that you won't mind doing for a few years.

I haven't used any of the stuff I larned in kollidge, and would get some certs if I had to do it over again.

I believe that many JC programs will allow you to earn certs as part of the degree program.

College degrees are useful, but they don't mean that you know what you're doing.  Here's my take on what each degree means in the business world...

Associate Degree: "I'm willing to try."
Bachelor's Degree: "I'm willing to stick to a project and finish it."
Master's Degree: "I'm willing to spend money to make money."
PHD: "I have more money than sense."

Yeah, it's a brave new world.

When I started college, MS-DOS was a twinkle in Bill's eye.

I agree with all but the last.  Most of the PhD students/conferees I know are pretty poor, but have managed to put off real work for years.  I have to admire that sensibility.

Okay, how about this...

Associate Degree: "I'm willing to try."
Bachelor's Degree: "I'm willing to stick to a project and finish it."
Master's Degree: "I'm willing to spend money to make money."
PHD: "I put off paying back my student loans for 15 years so far."

I worked as an application developer for 8 years and my degree is in a completely unrelated field.  Now I'm working in IT, and still no formal education in the area.

In technology fields like programming and IT, degrees aren't as important as in other fields.  At least, the lack of formal education in that area has never been a hindrance to me in my technology career.  YMMV.

I don't have a degree in anything computer related and still have a job that requires programming skills.

Join the Army. They will show you how to "work with computers" and "train" you as an "engineer".

I will have all MCSE degrees in a week. Bill Gates mailed me personally where I could get them cheap.

Every single tech manager I have had thus far has been an English major.

Every single one.

I think I chose the wrong major.

At one of the companies I used to work for, our Director of IT had a Ph.D. in Laser Physics.
