My opinion of Microsoft Office 2007 can be summed up by this phrase:  Lipstick on a pig

We just got the "upgrade" to Office 2003.

The only thing that I like better about 2003 is the colored flags on emails.

I've only used '97, but I like it. It renders faster than OpenOffice for me. Of course, now that Firefox 2.0 includes a spell checker, I never need Office.  8-)

I liked the colored flags too, and used them.

I say "used", past tense, because that's one of the many things they removed from MS Office 2007.   :|

MS Office has always pissed me off, and thier adding of useless features continues exponentially...

OpenOffice for the win, it does take a little longer to get warmed up, but it doesn't try to correct EVERYTHING I do.

(I know you can turn of all of MS Words many Auto Format options, but you just shouldn't have to, damnit!)

Will they (your employer) let you roll back to 2003? Or are you restricted from adding/removing/changing progs? We've been clamped down like you wouldn't believe. I used to be able to put progs on my machine (or modify them); now, The Network sees it and freaks out. "Mozilla Firefox is UNAUTHORIZED! This is a Security Breach! Remove this program immediately or this machine will be disconnected from The Network!"
I finally gave up on my office machine. I removed everything on there not installed by Them, and dont even try to surf or do ANYthing except work. I use my laptop for my personal, non-work-related PCing. I'm sure this pisses Them right off, since now there's nothing going on on company machines for them to spy on, except WORK.
On a semi-related note; has anyone migrated from Slowtus Notes to Outlook? We've started that process, and Im askeered. This company only does things from Bad to Worse, and sLotus Notes is pretty fucking bad. I can only imagine the impending circus.
 Send in the Clowns.

I'm a domain admin.  I'm the guy telling users that they can't install stuff.   :w:

This is installed on our own internal terminal server so that we can learn the ins and outs of it so that we can accomodate hosted clients who request to move to Office 2007.

It isn't a matter of "will they let" us roll it back... it's a matter of us needing to be using it so that we can support it.

I got office on my box and never installed it. Finally deleted it yesterday for the space. Open Office ftw.

BOFH ;)

It sucks that you'll have to be supporting something you don't believe in, especially as it's Office, you'll be expecting many confused and angry clients...

Fortunately we are not early MS adopters so we won't go to Vista or Off07 for several more years if at all.  Thanks for the heads up though as if I replace the wife's laptop, I'll try to avoid the newer versions.

As of currently, I dont see myself EVER installing Vista; on principle alone.
Of course, I said that about XP, too, but after it had been hacked apart
to where you dont have to "validate" every install, I eventually started using it.
Vista, on the other hand, from what Ive read, isnt something I care to have on my
machine at all; even if it was free.

The removal of the colored flags is indeed a bad thing, although you can do a lot with categories. I studied all the ins and outs of office but on a daily base I might use 10 % of it's capabilities. For the "normal" user it is just too much.

Sounds attractive, and like a good investment!

But in all seriousness, from my experience with Microshaft office the only thing I ever really got annoyed with was Word. The rest of the programs were fine. Word is obnoxious to format anything in, like power noting, as well as the fact that it always tries to correct sentences with nothing wrong with them.

Jeee that image with all the toolbars active is hilariously absurd.  In most apps I'll have at most one toolbar, since I have keyboard shortcuts memorized.  Clutter really sets off my OCD.

 ...would you?

You would never be able to install it to begin with.  But if the client (your employer) gave the go-ahead, I'd install it for you.  In fact, I normally suggest to clients to have Firefox (at least) installed because it's less headache for users than IE6.  For the record, we don't support IE7 in our data center, so it's either IE6 or nothing if clients don't want us to load Firefox or Opera on their terminal server(s).

The removal of the colored flags is indeed a bad thing, although you can do a lot with categories. I studied all the ins and outs of office but on a daily base I might use 10 % of it's capabilities. For the "normal" user it is just too much.

The categories are stupid.  You can get them to do the same thing as the colored flags if you rename all of them or just disregard the names.  But it seems pointless to remove a feature and then replace it with another feature similar to it but useless without a bunch of customization.

I've been fighting with Office 2007 all fricking day and I think I've figured out some workarounds, but even with those the lack of flexibility is extremely annoying to say the least.

We've implemented this for one customer who was bugging us about it constantly and they've been complaining almost as much as I have been.

I think based on their response we might in fact be rolling back to Office 2003 for them, because they really hate Office 2007 with a passion already and they've only been using it for a day.

Too lazy to find the Vista thread.

What a piece of garbage. More to come when I can stop seething over how it's going to make us rewrite the way we embed video into our sites.

Pointless and Microsoft are in the same categorie.
