I got a new keyboard...
« on: August 08, 2007, 03:59:57 PM »

...And I'm not sure if I like it or not. So far it has taken me about a minute to type all of this.

I decided to give one of the Microsoft ergonomic keyboards a try. So far I am pleased with the hot keys that will save me time, however I can't decide whether or not this layout is more comfortable than my previously normal QWERTY keyboard.

Do any of you guys use an ergonimic keyboard? If so, how do you like it? Did it take you a long time to adjust to the layout of the keys, because I'm sure having a hell of a time getting used to this!

I use a natural keyboard and I love it.  I even have one that I use with my laptop.  The easiest way to get used to it is to force yourself to sit with your elbows out away from your body.

If I had one for home, I could probably get used to it. If they started using them at work; we'd be toast, cos it would slo o o o o o w    mm e  e   e   e  down way too much. It's bad enough having to *click*, then use a keystroke, then reach for the mouse, *click*, type another keystroke, mouse-*click*, few more keystrokes, another mouce click...   instead of being able to Tab through. Not all our programs we use support mice (I'm serious.), and those that do handle it differently. There's no right-click copy OR paste in the context menu (even when you highlight text), so you have to use CNTRL+C ; then AlT-Tab to the next prog; which doesnt support mice OR "CNTRL+C (or V)" - it uses Alt+E, P to paste. But with no mouce; you have to tab through all but two fields; if you "tab" in those fields, it brings up a totally different screen than what you need.

So. . . .  uh... yeh. Congratulations on your new keyboard!! :-D

I've been using nothing but the natural/split keyboards for the last 10 years or more. I have a horrible time trying to type on a normal keyboard now.

I prefer the feel of the Logitech ones, but the Microsoft ones often have more/better features.

A little update for those of you who are curious and may want to buy an ergonomic keyboard...

So it's been well over a week now since I bought the Microsoft Natural 4000 keyboard from Newegg.com. My first impression was that it was a very cumbersome way of typing, but after two week's time, I have adapted fairly well. Keep in mind, however, that after years of typing with a normal flat QWERTY keyboard, it's hard to break old bad habits and I am still making progress on a daily basis on using this keyboard in the proper manner.

As for the hot keys, I sometime have a hard time remembering that they are there and will actually click on my Opera icon instead of hitting "1" for the forums, "2" for my local weather, "3 - 5" for pornography and so on. For those of you wondering, you can change the calculator, home, search and mail hotkey buttons so they do whatever you want (IE open more porn sites, if you wish).

If you're looking for a keyboard that will make you more efficient in the long run, and are willing to adapt the way that you type, then I suggest trying an ergonomic keyboard. Perhaps not this very model because of its price - there are cheaper ones out there that won't break the bank. You know, since I'm that rich and everything.
