l337 Dell case mod I did
« on: April 28, 2010, 03:30:17 PM »

Where I work I have a 5+ year old Dell Dimension E310.  It has a screwy opening in the side, just behind the front face of the case, which has a fan running in it, presumably to look cool while sucking in air.

However, I've noticed wherever I've encountered Dell machines with this particular case design, they ALL make a really annoying buzz and hum all the time, because the fan causes some loose part of the face of the tower to vibrate.

When you sit next to the damned thing all day, it'll drive you nuts.

So I came up with a l337 case mod to solve this problem.

What is that jammed in there you ask?

That's right.  That's a broken off pencil I have skillfully jammed between the air intake grate and the outer shell of the case of this stupid computer.

The pencil pushes against both parts and stops whatever was buzzing from making noise from the fan vibration.

Ingenious! what a stupid case design.

i actually dislike the internal design of dells. the modular design means everything needs those green hold-upper thingies to fit properly.

Same here. I'm glad I'm not using a desktop anymore at work. My Lappy 486 works just fine.

I like Dell desktop machines for the most part.  In my experience they've been reliable, cost effective, and generally good hardware.

But any time I have to open one up, a stream of swear words begins to come out of my mouth like you wouldn't believe.  I HATE working on Dells.

if you think dells are bad, try working with cybertrons. (not the planet, its a brand, really!) the school i worked at got a crapload of them on the cheap, and for a good reason. the inside looks like an electricians junkstore, and worst of all they came with a nonstandard video output. we had to outfit them all with transformers. and did i mention that they broke all. the. freaking. time!

A nonstandard video output?  Whisky Tango Foxtrot?  Who does that?

yeah, they were all outfitted with el cheapo video cards with DVI or something. i really don't care if its a superior video format or not, if it doesn't fit our monitors, its a moot point.

He is a she, and that is a metal plate. The ones that are in the back of your case behind unused PCI slots.

One of the last things I have kicking around from the old days (we're talking 1989) is a box of like 500 of those plates -- a few shiny smooth well-tooled ones from IBM PC-ATs, but most of them lower grade ones from hundreds of PC clones I maintained back then.

So if you need any more, I'm your man.

You should build a computer case out of them. Weld them all together. That would rock!

I don't have a welder or know how to use one, but maybe J-B Weld would work...
