I'm always thinking about ways to improve this place and ways to make things more interesting on the forums here. I'm currently still looking for a way to link this forum database along with a CMS, but that's slow going.

So then it hit me: Why not ask the members what features / functions / changes they would like to see implemented? I'm sure I've had a thread like this in the past, but it hasn't been stickied before!

If you have seen a cool feature somewhere else that you think we should have here, this is the thread to let me know. If you have an idea to make things interesting around here, this is the thread. If you have noticed something that should be taken care of, this is the place to let me know.

For example: It dawned on me that in the past I have run certain "contests" on these forums, but they were always a real pain in the ass because it required me to obtain a product, and the re-package it and then send it to the winner. So why not offer up some kind of Amazon.com or Newegg.com gift certificate instead?

If you don't want to come out in the open with your suggestion / comment / whatever you want to call it, feel free to PM me with your ideas.

Also, I know we all like to have fun within threads, but let's try to keep this one on track. There are several thousand other threads out there that can be de-railed, so try to pick one of them instead.

Is there any way to make the shout box the same size (relative) as the forum boards? The text, I mean. We seem to use that for real time chat as much as we use the boards for posting. It's become more than a "neat, little feature"; it's almost integral now.
Also, is there any way to allow members to delete their own shouts?

Can the avatar be removed from the shoutbox?

I normally hide avatars and sigs when at work, but the shoutbox avatar is not affected by that setting.

Actually -- scratch that. This is what I'd really like:

I like to hide the shoutbox, but when I do that I also hide the "Show unread posts since last visit" link. Can that link be moved somewhere else?

There is a little '-' to the right of the time, way up at the top right under the 'm' in 'forum. I think that has been there for a while. I remember hiding the shoutbox when it first was started

Yes, that's what I use... but when I hide the shoutbox, I also hide the "Show unread posts" link, which is the only way I navigate the forums. So I have to keep hiding and unhiding the shoutbox.

Which now seems like such a silly little thing to complain about.

I have put an "Unread" button right below where is says "Hello [username]" (if you have the shout box collapsed, that is.

Let me know how this works out.

I believe he's talking about how your own avatar is displayed next to the shout box on the left hand side. I used to never have signatures enabled, but only recently I re-enabled them on my account so I could see what everyone was doing.

I have reduced the shout box font to something a little bit smaller so it doesn't look like it was designed for those who are visually impaired to the point where they cannot operate a motor vehicle.

Thank you, I think that's a lot better. If the shoutbox were to be bigger, I think it would make more sense to have more lines of text, so you can see more of the conversation.

Like when you orient your wide screen on its side so you can see more code.

I think I just uninstalled that mod not too long ago. I think the issue was that it would embed youtube videos into the shoutbox too, and sometimes external embedding was disabled by youtube. It would be nice to find a mod that did it right though, maybe this is a different one than what was previously installed.

It looks like this one could be very adaptable. The example given is to create the youtube tag, but I suppose you could use it to create anything that requires users to provide a parametter. For instace, you could probably code something to get googlemaps working where the user must enter a street address or a coordinate. I don't think it handles multiple variables however.
