Let me ask this another way: What kind of society are we that can look at a toothless old alcoholic grandma lying in the streets in a puddle of her own urine, and think this is somehow preferable to bunging her up in an institution?

One that doesn't like to waste money on worthless people.

Well, ivan, according to Evonus, you would be doing the right thing by society if you took that toothless, old, alcoholic grandma and put a bullet in the back of her head.

Nah, that should be the police's job.

Institutionalizing them is absolutely pointless. It's making an investment of money, land, and people, using up good resources, on people that'll never ever give any sort of return investment. I don't see the logic.

103
It sounds easy, but what most employers want from prospective employes is an address, phone number, bank account and (Not sure what the US equivilant is, if applicable) a National Insurance number.  Especially the bigger chains like McD's (I should know, I've just got through the interview stage for my very own McJob... Urgh.).

Somehow, I don't think they'd accept "The bench outside" as an address, "A payphone" as a phone number or "My pocket" as a bank account.

A lot of people say this, but I find it funny that Mexicans, and Caribbean people can come into this country, speaking no English, and some of them not even being in here legally, and yet still find a job. Restaurants will take pretty much anyone as a dishwasher or bus boy. You just can't be lazy.

If most homeless people are too mentally ill to hold a job, what would you propose doing about them? What if they are too mentally ill to care for themselves? No employer I have ever worked for would consider hiring a dirty-looking lunatic. No person I have ever met would patronize an establishment staffed by dirty-looking lunatics.

What do we do?

We have 2 options:

1. Institutionalize them.

2. Ignore them.

You forgot,

3. Set up an agency to help them get jobs.

It really doesn't take much to work as a Janitor or housekeeping staff, or like I said above, a dishwasher or whatnot. We have some mentally slow people working at my college that work in the housekeeping staff, and people who don't speak a word of English working as mechanics and such.

4. If all else fails, terminate them.

There's no point in keeping them alive if they can't even accomplish anything but a raise in the crime rate, and I don't think people that go bust their ass for 40-60 hours a week should have to shell out money to pay for people they don't care about.

Right now I work 14 hour monday, 9 hour tuesday, 14 hour wednesday, 8-9 hour thursday and friday.

It sucks.  I'm tired.

Starting June 18ish, I'll be working 0 hours mon-friday with weekends off.  That's only for 2 weeks though.  Then it will be 6 hour days mon-thurs with 3 day weekend.  That's for 5 weeks.  Then I have the 0 hours/day again for another 3 or so weeks.  Then it starts again what I'm doing now.

But seriously, 12 hour days sounds interesting.  I always liked the 4 10 hour days.  It wouldn't really work at my job.

I thought you were an algebra teacher. Do you teach multiple schools or something?

I'm going to be smiling for the rest of the day.

I despise two-legged, two-armed beggars. Get a fucking job, or have the balls enough to rob someone. Just how fucking lazy can one person be...

Yeah I feel the same way. I feel bad for the disabled people, but in all honesty, of all the homeless I've run into over the years, the actual or at least seemingly disabled people were less than 5% of them.

For me it'd depend on the ride I'd have to do each day. If the ride was short I'd prefer a 4-5 day workweek, but if it's a long ride I'd rather work fewer days and more hours.

The other day I found a shitty plastic purse with seventy dollars in quarters in my 73 Vega I keep parked on my lawn. I took out the seats and steering wheel so I didn't bother to lock the doors, so it doesn't suprise me that somebody would try and go in there, but I have no idea why this money is here. I've spent half of it, but I'm a bit worried about somebody coming back to look for it. What would you guys do?

Spend the other half.

Don't flatter yourself.  As with the vast majority of other things that happen on this board, this is not about you, and once again, I would prefer it if you would stay out of this.  I wasn't asking because I want to continue to read your drivel.  I was asking because the text of all of your posts disappeared, along with your avatar and stats.  I was about to start a celebration thread or, at a minimum, make some happy/snarky comments about you finally being gone.  Since you're actually not gone, posts/threads of that nature surely would have gotten me an ass chewing.  So, I would like to know who almost created a gigantic misunderstanding by modifying my profile and not telling me about the change.

P.S. You don't 'but' heads with someone, you 'butt' heads with them.

I never said it was about me. My post wasn't even addressing you. I was responding to something Ivan said, that's why I quoted him.

As far as you making a celebration thread about me leaving or whatnot, I honestly really don't see why you care so much. I really don't post all that often, and with the exception of brief intervals, I never have, and if you hate what I say that much you could simply use the ignore feature, or ignore me the old fashioned way. I seriously think you make me out to be a much bigger deal than I really am.

Ah hahaha.

Wish someone would do that for me.

I'd say do it yourself, but I think we both know you'd rather but heads with me.

Would a doctor implant a liver if I carried it into the hospital inside a cooler NQA?

I'll do it for you for a small fee, just swing on by.

Of course they don't follow up, the vast majority of the public doesn't care about people when they're healthy, they only care about them when they're freaks and outlandish, either socially, or physically.

Ah! Dang it! I've been doing it all wrong these last two decades!

Strange, however, that I haven't found any mention of this startling medical fact anywhere on the internet. It must be just now coming out of years-long research and testing.

We might also inform the FDA that their guidelines for aspirin and alcohol use is woefully inadequate:

Q. What should consumers who are taking low dose aspirin for disease maintenance or prevention know about alcohol use?

A. Patients who consume 3 or more alcoholic drinks every day should be counseled about the bleeding risks involved with chronic, heavy alcohol use while taking aspirin.

That should be revised to read:

A. According to Evonus, if a patient consumes 3 glasses of wine and 2 aspirin tablets in the course of one hour, he may damage the lining of his stomach, whereas drinking the 3 glasses alone, or taking the aspirin alone, will have no adverse effect on the lining of his stomach.

I'll bring this up with my doctor, too.

Okay, feel free.

So, assuming I have no indications of liver disease or internal bleeding, would you say that I am at risk if I have a half-bottle or so of a 1982 Chateau Margaux with my roasted chicken, then take two 325mg aspirin tablets before bed?

Obviously it would depend on how fast you drank it. If you drank it all within the hour, I'd say that you could potentially damage the lining of your stomach.

I see.

How does aspirin chemically interact with alcohol? What byproduct is produced as a result of their reaction? How does that byproduct affect the human organism?

There isn't a reaction between the two chemicals, per se, at least as far as I remember. The alcohol serves as a catalyst to increase the negative affects of the aspirin, by making it more reactive with the lining of the stomach, as well as decreasing the pH of the gastrointestinal fluids.

Quote
After you've answered that, please tell me the same with regard to alcohol and acetaminophen. How do they interact?

You can google it, and cut and paste the answers, but I would think that since it's your area of interest you can give me an illuminating answer off the top of your head.

Acetometaphin I'm not as familiar with, I've only really seen the relationship of the two in one article a few years ago. I believe that acetometaphin reduces the livers ability to function, and obviously, as alcohol is metabolized in the liver, it prevents this from happening and causes a backup, but don't quote me on that one.

Evonus, if you feel you are being unjustly targeted, then I fervently urge you to place me on your ignore list. I can't imagine why someone would willingly subject oneself to repeated insult, unless one enjoys it on some level. Not to mention the fact that you repeatedly invite strong reaction to your careless remarks.

Fact, I really don't give a shit about what you say, insulting or complimenting, that's why I haven't added you to my ignore list. I have 3 younger brothers, and I was the nerdy kid in school, I know what it's like to be aggravated every day from the time I get up, to the time I go to bed, and I've basically become resistant to being insulted. You can't get anything other than a giggle or a standard response from me without referencing my personal life.

Quote
The remark that I challenged was this: "Alcohol and aspirin really aren't good together." You posted this remark with no qualification, so I challenged it. My argument is, essentially, that aspirin and alcohol are about as harmful together as they are seperately. Of course this piqued your vanity, since -- God knows why -- you labor under the idea that every one of your utterances must be cherished and accepted without question or challenge by the rest of humanity. So you did what any internet-savvy cretin would do, and Googled "aspirin alcohol". Then, brainlessly, instead of analyzing the findings gained by your painstaking research, you blithely cut and pasted something that on its face appeared to corroborate your initial ignorant utterance.

I know this will come as a shock to you, because you can't believe that someone you don't particularly care for knows more than you about a topic, but this is my area of interest, and the area I am pursuing a career in, so hence, I know a little bit about it I'd think. I know a great deal about chemical reactions involving medications, I didn't read what I said on a bumper sticker, but you guys complain that I don't have a source, so I found one for you.

How many is "every"? One? Two? Three? Four? Ten? Twenty? And yet, having such extensive and erudite publications at your fingertips, you still chose to Google an internet source in your quest to smash my rebuttal. I suppose I must accept, with chagrin, that this is a measure of the contempt you hold for me. I suppose you consider me incapable of understanding or accepting an exerpt from a scientifically advanced source. So it is with great sadness that I must remove myself from this and all further debate. You are unbeatable. You will prevail in every argument. I am chastened and crushed. I leave it to others on this site to either learn at your feet or -- if they dare -- timorously question your words.

I don't have the sources with me still. Like I told you, this is the area I study, and thus I've been handed a few(3-4) pieces of literature containing this topic, none of which I still have, because I have nothing with me from school right now, because I'm not at school. Most sources I will ever present to you on this site will come from google, because I obviously can't show you a book or magazine I'm reading, and I don't get most of my information originally from the internet. Don't like it? Don't engage me in debate in the future.

Does anyone know if burnt steel wool is iron oxide? I've heard conflicting reports about this.

Iron oxide is rust.
