Ok.. sorry I posted and disappeared. I've got a bone to pick with someone here

Apparantly my friend let herself in (has a key) and I was gone, so she looked through my bookmarks.. Anyway she stumbled upon a post about hacking hotmail *sigh.* Her boyfriends a dirtbag and all, she wants to read his email, you know one of "those" people. So she sees a post she says is from one of you...? And despite my request that she never download anything, she get it and runs it. A bat file. Without looking at it.

So I spent my weekend using data recovery, changing attributes on my entire windows directory, and cursing at the command prompt.

Needless to say I put passwords on everything. Also, I ate my friend. Hannibal Lector style. Ok but what I really meant to say (this is why I don't post, I'm a rambler, and not the car)

Aw man.... that sucks!

I happen to know a thing or two about most "hotmail hacking" batch files around here. Is there anything you need help with as far as getting your PC back to normal? Depending on which one she ran, there could be a lot, or only a little damage... and you might not see all of it right away.

Do you know which one she ran?

I'm going to have to reformat and all that again, but thanks anyway. The computer freezes at seemingly random intervals. It actually froze a few minutes ago while I was attempting to respond to this.

The mouse moves around but nothing else, not a typical freeze. Wish I could use Linux lol. The thing that upsets me most is losing my music I was in the middle of composing, I've got most of it back down but a few phrases are missing. Thats life, right?

I think I remember someone who kept yelling at us to 'teach her to hack her boyfriend's Hotmail'? That may have been who it was...

c:\*.sys del c:\*.sys >> autoexec.bat
But I would think windows setup should put those files back where they belong, no? *sigh* I've been forced into using an inferior OS, help

Oh and she's not the one who posted it, she went through my bookmarks and found that post on this forum somehow, same kind of situation. And who says I didn't take it out on her Detta? I cannabalized her, member?

D'oh! Hotmail3.bat at its finest.

The only thing you need to do is boot into DOS mode (which you should be able to do with a boot floppy, since you're using Windows 95/98, I'm assuming), and edit your Autoexec.bat to take the bad stuff out. If I recall correctly, pretty much everything hotmail3.bat puts in it is bad. You might be better off just deleting your autoexec... the system will create a new one for you.

I did that already, that was the first thing I checked. And since it was read only I just renamed it. I reinstalled windows (to a brand new directory), and tryed to reinstall IE. It wouldnt reinstall, it said it couldnt install on two OSs at once, boot up on the old OS and uninstall it. I can't boot up from my old windows directory, I had to delete it entirely. I installed the latest explorer to a new directory.

The reason I'm meantioning all this is because I have everything working like a charm.. except for explorer. The freeze only happens when I browse for more than a few minutes, the computer just stops responding in the weird way I described. I'd just use netscape, but this applies to windows explorer.. IE I cant look through my directories in a reasonable manner. I take it no ones familiar enough with the inner workings of windows and explorer to help me.. what a pain, I just don't want to go through all the hastle of backing up when its just one thing. I've got about 20 gig of downloaded material.. mostly on a 56k

But really guys, I'm just venting

Don't worry about me, I know how to fix it if I really have to. Thanks, this has been an offical nonsensical ramble.
