Introduction…(Possums!)
« on: February 28, 2004, 10:34:23 AM »

Hey, n00b here. I don't know what the traditional introduction is, but here goes. I am a dude, a film making dude. I have two systems that I am proud to own, an iMac G4 1GHz, and an iBook G4 800MHz. I am currently reading a great book, called "Geeks" by Jon Katz, it has about become my new bible. I do some religious studies, mostly alternative things nobodies ever heard of. I'm on cable access and have a wireless connection in my house, that I set up myself (take that Best Buy)! I don't have anything else to add, um, check my profile for my interests and things…oh yeah…possums.

You mean Manicheanism? Well, I guess one "n" doesn't matter. I'll have to check it out...

Quote from: Church Rodent.com
Mani was its founder who had taught in Persia, and had met there a martyr's death by crucifixion in 276 or 277. The fundamental belief of the religion pictured the universe as the scene of an eternal conflict of two powers, the one good, the other evil. Man, as we know him, is a mixed product, the spiritual part of his nature consists of the good element, the physical of the evil. His task, therefore, is to free the good in him from the evil; and this can be accomplished by prayer, but especially by abstinence from all the enjoyments of evil: riches, lust, wine, meats, luxurious houses and the like. Like Gnosticism, taught that the true spiritual Jesus had no material body and did not actually die. Augustine was a Manichean for nine years, from 372-383, before dissatisfaction with its teachings arose in his mind.

Funny, the majority of Mac users I know have the same knee-jerk reaction to Windows, yet nobody would DARE label them 'closed minded'.   Anyways, welcome new guy! I do both Mac OS and varieties of Microsoft OSes, so I'm taking heat from both sides.

I have a knee-jerk reaction to Windows, because I've "been there, done that", you know? I'm sure the "Macintosh sucks" person has never laid a hand on one, at least since X.2 came out.

Awfully presumptuous of you.

As a matter of fact, I have used Macintosh off and on the last three years. Not my primary system, but I occasionally use it at work.

OK not every day then. Someone from another forum said:

You can easily emulate a MAC by lowering your PC screen resolution to 800x600 and turning the monitor colour settings down to give it that great washed out greyscale effect so envied of MAC owners. To further enhance the effect of MAC ownership you could cello tape your CDROM drive to the side of your monitor and superglue your tower case together thus making upgrading impossible. Also, hide 75% of your current software, then throw the equivilant amount your PC cost you, in the bin for that real wallet lightening MAC feel. Finally, any brand of bright colourful auto spray paint can be used to bring to life your new MAC.

That was cute.

How do you know it was unprovoked? Maybe she honestly thinks Macs suck, based on empircal data?

Because emperical data wouldn't support that.

Macs are actually very good in certain professions, like graphical design.

Yes, presumptuous. You presumed that I had never used a Mac. I have. Recently.

As for your "Unprovoked!" cry, I was simply stating my opinion. Sounds like you have a chip on your shoulder. Get over it.

That's fine and all. But what if I use a Mac (I had three for years) and just don't like them? What if it doesn't do what I need it to?

Sweet mercy, the rate of fanaticism among the Mac faithful is ridiculous. If you say anything even remotely negative about a Mac they act like you just dropped your pants, squatted over their mother and let loose a steaming load. It's a fricken computer people! Mac OS based computers are good for graphic artists, multimedia manipulation and other artsy things. Windows based PCs are good for games, business apps and other programs along those lines. *nix machines are great for web servers (hell servers in general) and a good alternative choice for those who do not like either of the other OSes for one reason or another.  NO ONE PLATFORM IS INHERETNLY BETTER THAN ANOTHER! "Huurr, teh eval MICRO$$$$OFT IS INSECURE. THEY ONLY MAKE WINDOWS TO MAKE MONEY, THOSE BASTARDS!" Guess what, genius? Do a "Find and Replace" of all windows machines in world with *nix or Mac OS based computers and suprise, suprise you'll see a crap load of security faults, backdoor threats and virus attacks go through the roof for those platforms. Why? Is it because Mac OS and *nix are insecure? Think about it. If you're a l33t HaX0R, what are you going to spend your time programming\searching for? That's right. You'll look for security holes and make viruses for the OS with the most users, which at this point in time happen to be Microsoft based. Mac OS is not bulletproof, no matter how much you drooling fanboys might like to think it is. There is NOTHING in it for hackers. No notoriety to be gained. No massive publicity about bringing down thousands of companies because of their creation. Why bother? Hackers\Script Kiddies\Virus makers are generally egotistical and like the publicity they get. If not, then why would they include clever messages in their code, such as "Oh, Billy Gates, why do you design such poor code?" and crap like that. So to all you fanatics everywhere for every platform, I extend a hearty STFU! Besides, we all know OS\2 Warp is TEH BEST OS EVAR!!!11!!

Oh yeah, New Guy, this wan't really directed towards you per se, so don't take it personal. Like I said, I walk both sides of the aisle here*.  I've got my MCSE and also have my Apple Certified Desktop\Portable Technician. I do not favour one over the other as they are both equally useful to me. Where would you like to go to today to think different?

Just so we all know, I'm not a big Mac user.  In fact, I probably couldn't even run one.  I've never even used one.

But, if you're wanting to use a scientific term like "emperical," then you need to use the term correctly.

That's why I brought up "graphical designer."  Not to say that you are a designer, but as an example that you can't use that term for what you were intending.

Thank you, and shut up.
