Heyas
« on: February 12, 2010, 12:31:42 PM »

Despite some replies to former newcomers, I'll bravely give this "introduce yourself" thing a shot!

I'm Sem. I spend quite alot of my time at the computer, but I also like to go out on the town/visit festivals/drink some beers in the park on a sunny afternoon or generally have a good time in any sort of way.
My English might not always be the best (in fact, I'm pretty sure that it isn't) but I like to think I have a pretty good excuse: It's not my native language!

I'll continue browsing the forums for a bit now, be seeing you. :)

What is your native language?

Alien Space Slugs or Earthbound Toxic Waste?

Neither of those two, take another guess!

amazing how easy it is for foreigners to sound fine on the internet, yet put terrible engrish on expensive-to-fix billboards and signs.

In my experience, Dutch internetters have an admirable command of the English language. This goes all the way back to the 90s on Usenet.

Why is that?

another weird thing (speaking of japan in particular) is that the Japanese are surrounded by English. ever seen Tokyo? most of the ads are in English (albeit in single words). ever played a Japanese game that hasn't been translated? the title screen is in English, the in-game writing tends to be in English, some of the menu is usually in English, and the numbers (if you have hp/mp) are western. just about the only thing in Japanese, usually, are the subtitles(and/or voice acting if applicable).

obviously there are many subversions and variants to this, but it seems to hold true mostly with old games.

  That's called marketing.

Haha, especially the Chinese Asians are pro's at this. I could give you a link to http://www.engrish.com/ , but judging from your comment you already know it, so I won't.
