Are you kidding? Mr. Spock was a sex symbol from the start. He's the mysterious Other, the savage lover who keeps his roiling passions in check. And when he lets loose every seven years or so, whoo-boy, stand back.

Sure, Kirk is the obvious sex symbol, in the usual leering eyebrow-waggling prancing-goat horndog sort of way, but don't think for one moment that Spock wasn't supposed to be as big a sex symbol as, say, the Professor on Gilligan's Island.

I'm not sure what you mean by "keep the whole racial situation under check". Roddenberry's concept of the future world was complete harmony and cooperation among all the world's nations (after passing through some pretty bad patches along the way). The Federation enlists the most talented and capable people from all nations.

The Uhura character was a triple-play. Remember, this was the '60s. Including a black person as a regular character on an Americal TV show made a strong, and rare statement. Second, portraying a woman as a mental equal with men also made a strong and rare statement. And the third whammy is that this liberated black female professional is still a sensual, feminine woman. She was one king hell of a role model.

Of course, for you Star Trek is probably not much more than the most recent movie. I'm guessing that because, to us old Trekkers, Uhura and Spock don't kiss -- it's Uhura and Kirk who kiss, in the episode Plato's Stepchildren, albeit against their wills. It was the first scripted interracial kiss on American television.
