Dreamweaver?
« on: May 15, 2007, 05:13:12 PM »

I'm sitting down once again to start coding my new site (I got a deal with scrapetorrent so I get a discount on hosting to about five bucks Canadian each month with shitloads of features), and once again I'm struck with my horrible lack of skillz. I learned to write decent HTML in 1999, mainly by taking apart other people's sites and messing around through trial and error, but now that makes sites look like, well, they were made in 1999. I really just want to run a site where I can rant, post satirical ramblings, maybe a podcast and some video/audio files, at least at the moment. I'd like as much technical control as possible, but I'm not sure if I want to learn PHP or Java, at least right now. Dreamweaver seems a logical choice, but I've  seen some of it's output code and it doesn't seem very streamlined at all. What would you guys recommend?

You can do all that stuff with a MySpace account.

It wouldn't be organized blog style, and I hate both the way that MySpace accounts look and the terms of use I'd have to agree to in order to use it.

wordpress

I mean, if you're not going to write your site from scratch like I did, wordpress seems like a good tool.

I was just joshing with the MySpace remark.

If you do end up taking up a new language, however, try PHP rather than Java. You can download an open source package that's close to what you want, and learn the language by tweaking the package.

Yeah I knew, I was hoping for real advice eventually (NOTE TO ANY N00BS READING THIS---IT'S A GOOD IDEA). Any suggestions for which package (har har Pb, +1) I would like?

I'm sure they're out there. Milifist probably knows some good ones. I looked at a few open source commerce site packages, of which ZenCart was my favourite, but haven't looked at much else.

Try this: http://sourceforge.net/projects/sphpblog/

Wordpress looks pretty cool, it should work fine while I'm still a giant n00b and later on I can hack it to bits.

Joomla seems worth a look, apparently relatively easy to operate according to This Guy who went to great lengths (loaded with lot's o' links) to do a comparison between "joomla" and "Drupal" , two highly regarded open source CMS's.

Dream weaver
Ive just closed my eyes again
Climbed aboard the dream weaver train
Driver take away my worries of today
And leave tomorrow behind
Ooh dream weaver
I believe you can get me through the night
Ooh dream weaver
I believe we can reach the morning light

Fly me high through the starry skies
Maybe to an astral plane
Cross the highways of fantasy
Help me to forget todays pain

Ooh dream weaver
I believe you can get me through the night
Ooh dream weaver
I believe we can reach the morning light

Though the dawn may be coming soon
There still may be some time
Fly me away to the bright side of the moon
And meet me on the other side

Ooh dream weaver
I believe you can get me through the night
Ooh dream weaver
I believe we can reach the morning light
Dream weaver

I've been playing with joomla recently because I'm in the process of rebuilding my website. For someone with little or no experience, this is the way to go. You can keep things as simple or as complicated as you need. If you have no clue what you are doing, then you can just pick a template you'll want to use, active/deactivate template features, modify your menus and start writing content.

If you want to tweak things a little (or a lot), there are a shit load of third party components that can be downloaded for free and that do various things. Also, editing existing php files in notepad (or creatig new ones) is always an option.

If you have no experience in php, you'll probaby encouter some minor issue at some point. Luckilly, the joomla forum is available and filled with people who are willing to lend a hand. 99% of the time, you will find your anwsers by searching the forums anyway as most isses you will encouter have already been raised (don't be a noob, take the time to search!).

If you choose to go with joomla, you'll need to understand what are components, mambots, modules, categories and sections (and how to best use them). After you run the initial installation, the Joomla helpfile, which is built into the admin panel, is a good place to start reading.

I recommend installing thte program with sample data. Take time to fiddle around with all the functions until you know how to turn things on and off, change their locations, create new sections and categories, menus, etc. Once you have a good understanding of how things work, the delete everything and resinstall with no sample data. Now you are ready to build your site from scratch.

That sounds sweet, now all I need to do is decide on a server. I like DreamHost because with the discount from ScrapeTorrent it'll be quite affordable, but I still like the idea of an offshore host that would allow me to be edgier and more slanderous than usual.
