Daylight Savings Time changes and Slackware
« on: February 21, 2007, 06:05:29 PM »

In case anyone with a Slack box is wondering, good info here on fixing the Daylight Savings Time glitch on machines running anything older than Slackware 11:  http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/showthread.php?t=516681&

If you're running Slackware 11 you should be good to go.

Yeah, I feel you.  I'm a server admin in a DC that has 200+ Windows Server 2003 boxes that are all going to be needing some complicated hand holding through this process.

Plus our Exchange boxes are all in need of two parts to this... the actual update to Exchange, and then a different tool to "fix" each mailbox, one at a time.   :|

We'll be reeling from this for weeks, I'm sure.

For my home machines this is pretty simple, but I wish Windows were as easy as Linux sometimes.  It'd make my job tons less stressful.

Maybe that's where this is headed. I would like that too. In any case, better than changing clocks twice every year.

I think the only time year-round DST was tried was years ago in England, and a bunch of school kids got run over in the dark, so they never tried it again.

That might be apocryphal.

I wish we could go off DST twice a year and not go on it.  Two days of an extra hour of sleep.  That would be awesome!

Sorry, ends 1 week later, not 2.

Instead of first Sunday in April, it will start on second Sunday in March.

Instead of last Sunday in October, it will end on first Sunday in November.

So DST will be extended by about a month.

There have been motions in California to adopt year-round DST. There are also motions to then adopt Double-Daylight Saving Time in the summer.

And we'd be in synch with the rest of the world every 12 years. Not bad!

I sent out the mass email telling everbody about it on campus, made the fix easily available, held two discussion meetings about the implications of not updating the systems and all I can do now is wait for the flood of trouble tickets to come in because nobody ever listens to a goddamn word I say around here anyways.

Yeah I saw it today and couldn't resist it struck me as so cool. I'm proud to say that within ten minutes of the first Baikov story I had requested the second.
