Title: What's your platform, Soul?
Post by: 12AX7 on June 30, 2011, 03:21:59 PM
If you were elected in a capacity to allow it; what laws would you repeal and why?

(if creating a law is part of your plan you can say so; but we kinda already have too many now)

Would you have a particular focus first? (economy, foreign policy, immigration, capital/corporate law, civil, etc.)

A reboot would be interesting.  New constitutional convention.  Don't even put stuff like Electoral college into the mix.  Spell out the number of constituents to rep (i.e. for every 100K people=1 lower house rep) that way the lobbiests would have more difficulty than just buying 535 people.  Define processes to prevent gerrymandering.  In the new constitution provide an expiration period for any passed legislation (say 10 years or something) that way if it's still a good idea, they'd have to pass it again.  If done right, we could make everything a lot fairer.

But then again, I think I'd rather break the county up into many smaller countries (eliminating the too big to fail problem) and organize a common market (kind of like the EU).  We could have countries like The Bay Area Uber Alles, Flyovervania, Texas, El Lay, Disneyland, etc.

I would repeal the law that states you must feel like shit the day after drinking too much beer.

Ooooh, how about the second law of thermodynamics?  Let's repeal that one.

I would create a points policy, everytime the police fail to solve a crime you've been the victim of you gain points. Then when you are parked on the curb, or in the wrong zone five minutes into the no parking time you can use those points to cancel out the stupid fiscal penalties they apply to you for just trying to fucking exist in your own neighbourhood.

Also, I would make it legal to throw teenagers in jail cells a cool off period over night, just for public nuisance or giving cops lip. That would stop them vandalising cars and throwing bricks at houses... maybe.

Don't even get me started, 12.

Unlike the rest of you slacker wiseasses, I intend to give a serious answer here.  Later.  Over the weekend.

In all seriousness, I am actually thinking about this and will post over the weekend when I have a bit of free time.

Good call on a throught provoking topic, 12.

In all seriousness, my answer is pretty simple.  I'd repeal anything that isn't explicitly authorized by the US Constitution on a federal level, and by the Minnesota Constitution on my state level.

I was being serious.  Well maybe not with respect to some of the nation names.

Thank you.  :-)

I understand that you didn't specify which weekend; but do you have any idea what month it will be in? :P

Ahhaha...  I figure yours would be about like mine....   and Wunderkind's.

I believe there should be FAR fewer laws and more gene-pool cleansing accidents.

I have put some deep thought into this, but constructing my answer in an intelligent way is difficult. It'll probably be a TL;DR post in the near future.

Ok, it turned out to be a TL;DW.
