Political Opinions / The AIG thing
« on: March 19, 2009, 01:16:51 PM »
Let me see if I understand this.

A whole bunch of capitalists all over the world bought a whole bunch of US mortgages. They assumed the mortgages would make them piles of dough, but just in case something goes terribly wrong, these capitalists bought insurance to cover any unforseen losses. A lot of them bought that insurance from AIG, because AIG specialized in that kind of thing. Now, AIG was pretty much rofling all the way to the bank, because the housing market was fucking unbeatable. A sure bet. It was like selling insurance against the sun blowing up. In fact, AIG was so stinking sure the housing market would never fail that it took a bunch of its cash and invested in the housing market! So when the unthinkable happens and the housing market collapses, AIG has nothing to liquidate to pay off any insurance claims, which now have to be paid all at once. So then a bunch of politicians decide that AIG has to be kept going for the sake of the children of the world, so they give AIG a bunch of money to continue operations. When it turns out those operations include paying bonuses to AIG fatcats and giving money to AIG clients, many of whom are foreign banks, everyone gets upset, and want to punish AIG. Also, they want to make new rules so that this can't happen again.

I suppose the new rules will include the obvious: you can't be an insurer of something that you yourself invest in. So if you insure against housing market problems, you can't invest in the housing market. That's a sensible rule, but one would think that a bunch of smarties like the folk at AIG would have figured that out even without a rule. It's like having a rule against cutting your own head off. But anyway, fine, make the rule, but the larger question is: how does a firm with such inherent moronity become so huge? That's what I want to know. Because these guys didn't suddenly become stupid, they were stupid already. So there is something in the world of big finance that rewards and encourages stupidity. Something is protecting and coddling these morons, allowing them to become big players, instead of letting them die a darwinian death long before they get too big to fail. That is what needs to change.

Another rule, I hope, will be: No more bailouts. Let the failed company go into recievership, so that contracts could be renegotiated and so that creditors can be payed what is reasonable. Keeping a company afloat and then whaaing about how that company chooses to fix its problems is childish.

I'm not sure I actually understand all this, and I might be way off on my understanding of AIG's fumble. If anyone wants to correct my thinking, please do.

It must be, above all else, easy to use. Not "intuitive" -- easy.

It needs to work with software that is also easy to use. Easy to organize thousands of titles into playlists. Easy to archive rarely listened-to tracks. The emphasis is on an existing library of tracks (from CDs and LPs), but it should also be easy to buy new releases.

It should play video. Why not, eh?

So, what shall it be: Apple, Microsoft, Creative Labs or something else?

Please. Help me.

The Meaning of 'Hack'

"The word hack doesn't really have 69 different meanings", according to MIT hacker Phil Agre. "In fact, hack has only one meaning, an extremely subtle and profound one which defies articulation. Which connotation is implied by a given use of the word depends in similarly profound ways on the context. Similar remarks apply to a couple of other hacker words, most notably 'random'."

Hacking might be characterized as 'an appropriate application of ingenuity'. Whether the result is a quick-and-dirty patchwork job or a carefully crafted work of art, you have to admire the cleverness that went into it.

An important secondary meaning of hack is 'a creative practical joke'. This kind of hack is easier to explain to non-hackers than the programming kind. Of course, some hacks have both natures..."

I have found it.

And of course it's always been there. I simply wasn't paying attention in class.

I've been politically aware all my life (one of my cherished childhood memories is being in a peace march with 150,000 fellow San Franciscans in April of '67). Over the years, I've run the gamut from left to right and back, settling, like most people, somewhere in the middle. But I've always had problems with labels. I'm both liberal and conservative, and also other things those labels don't cover.

In recent years, I've gravitated towards libertarianism, even though I can't agree with its most extreme aspects. The reason I like it, however, is because it makes sense to my jaded lefty sensibilities.

Well, today I came upon a discussion in which the term "classical liberalism" was used interchangeably with "libertarianism". I looked it up.

And behold!

This is who I am.

Anarchy / The long-overdue big fat CONCUR thread
« on: May 04, 2007, 01:16:14 PM »
I guess I'm a libertarian though I dislike the word because I don't believe in the gold standard or covert racism or American nationalism or a lot of other things that some self-identified libertarians seem to be into. However, I am a supporter of both laissez-faire economics and civil liberties so it's a better term than anything else and I think coining neologisms to describe one's own philosophy is narcissistic so I'll go with libertarian for now. I'm opposed to the drug war, any form of gun control other than a minimum age, and any immigration laws. I think the standing army should have a 99% cut in budget and personnel and the U.S. should withdraw all of its troops from outside of its borders immediately. I think we owe Iraq some money for reconstruction but our continued military presence there is absolutely disastrous. I would like to see a total separation of marriage and government but in the meantime I endorse gay marriage as a stopgap solution to the equal-rights crisis we are currently in, where heterosexuals have rights that homosexuals do not. I think that people involved in "polyamory," transgenderism, S&M, and probably bisexuality in general are confused or disturbed as the result of traumatic childhoods and should be treated, not indulged, and that the gay rights movement hurts its cause by affiliating with every sexually-defined personality type under the sun since most plain old homosexuals are well-adjusted people capable of stable relationships who are not acting out their pasts, but most transsexuals etc are just crazy; as a result, I think doctors who perform gender-reassignment are behaving unethically. I think racial profiling, torture, and imprisonment without charge are absolute evils that should never be practiced for any reason, but at the same time I acknowledge that Islamic terrorism is a real threat and I am suspicious of the motives of the people who want to ignore it entirely. I think there is something morally wrong with any person who willingly becomes a policeman, soldier, or politician, without exception. I think animal rights, veganism, opposition to GM food and nuclear power, and environmentalism in general are manifestations of a pagan fundamentalism. I think (know) that 99% of homeless people are alcoholic-addicts or schizophrenics and there are essentially no permanently homeless people who are just victims of economic circumstance, but to me this is even more of an argument for finding an effective way to help the homeless. I think you're stupid if you truly believe in religion, but that the vast majority of religious people are just going along for the ride to be socially acceptable. Any person who is opposed to homosexuality or abortion or taking the Ten Commandments out of courthouses or evolution and claims not to be a religious fundamentalist is a liar. Anyone who uses the expression "just as bad" in a religion debate is a moron. I think that the major problems in America today aside from overlarge government are bad parenting and a poor understanding of the latent psychological problems this causes, and people automatically adopting extreme contrarian positions as a response to underlying wrongs--for example, I'm adamantly opposed to the drug war, but I think people who refuse to admit that many drugs are seriously harmful are living in a fantasy world. I don't think there is anything illogical or wrong with saying "heroin should be completely legal for any adult with no restrictions whatsoever, but at the same time there is no good reason to ever use it and anyone who does is making an extremely poor choice." I think Canadians and Britons are on the whole more virulently and illogically nationalistic than Americans and let their outrage at being told what to do by Yankees cloud their judgment when we discuss foreign politics on this board. I think the minimum level of net-worth taxation necessary to sustain the proper functions of a minimal government is justifiable and any further taxation is theft. I think sales taxes or income taxes are horrible methods of taxation in any case. I don't think very many people really want peace in Israel-Palestine and most of the leaders on each side and their cheerleaders on this board just want to kill all the Arabs or all the Jews no matter how they couch their rhetoric. I'm also pretty sure that a lot of gun-ownership opponents really do want to see crime occur. I believe that properly conducted science is always right and there is absolutely no room for non-scientific explanations of anything; this especially means that people who believe in "paranormal phenomena" or "alternative medicine" are invariably scam artists or morons who should be laughed at in either case. I think Muhammad was a pedophile, highway robber, and perpetrator of genocide who came up with an amazingly effective scam to acquire more money and wives. I am not entirely convinced that Jesus ever existed but I think it's likely. I think almost all people who sue businesses are scam artists, and almost all people with back pain are opiate addicts. I think that state governments should take a relatively hard line on child abuse and neglect, including mandating vaccinations and such, and this is not in conflict with my general political philosophy because protecting the child's rights is more important than any fictitious parental right to inflict abuse. I think that fiat money is a-ok and the Federal Reserve is on the whole a good thing that manages the economy well, and a change to voluntary membership by banks is all that is needed to bring it into line with "libertarian" principles. I think that selling quack medical treatments should be illegal by grounds of fraud; this includes all homeopathy, magnetic cures, and non-scientific cancer treatments. I have a sneaking suspicion that every conservative on the Internet is a 50-year-old man with a big mustache who has been off work for the past 12 years with a fake disability claim and is posting from his riding mower. I believe that anyone who expresses the slightest sympathy with creationism should be loudly denounced and insulted until he shuts up, and that arguing with such people only lends them validity. I believe that liberal religion is as basically irrational and destructive as fundamentalism and is often a mask for fundamentalism anyway. I believe that Jimmy Carter is a senile Communist. I believe that I can be a libertarian who enjoys punk rock and NPR. I believe I will keep editing this post as I think of more things to say.

Oh and I guess I said it's okay to shoot a cop who tries to arrest you for pot possesion, so lol.

...except for the bit about Jimmy Carter, whom I believe to be neither senile nor a Communist.

But what a marvelous proclamation, Xol. Right on!

Political Opinions / The "n" word
« on: April 06, 2007, 11:41:41 AM »
Ok, let's see if I can lay this out logically:

1. Gas prices continue to rise. It's now a JEFF.COM cliche that minor events trigger price hikes. And when the cost of crude goes down, OPEC curtails production to keep driving the prices up. Granted it's a complex system, but when viewed as a whole, the global petrolium industrial complex is reaming the consumer.

2. In the US, far more than in other nations, our economy depends on gas. Also, far more than in other nations, the well-being of the citizenry depends on the economy, which depends on gas. Access to, and abililty to afford gas is vital to the vast majority of US citizens, except for maybe Ed Bagely, Jr.

3. One thing that everyone in the US (except maybe for American Fascists) can agree on is that the primary role of a government is to protect the rights of the citizenry.

4. If an individual or an entity consistently interferes with Americans' ability to engage in commerce and generally pursue happiness, and the government does nothing about it, then the government is in effect colluding with enemies of the people, and failing its prime directive.

5. If the government decides to interfere with Big Oil's ability to engage in commerce and pursue whatever it considers to be happiness (and I think we all know what that is) by doing something drastic, albeit popular, like, for instance, regulating the price of gas, then it will rightly be seen as a fascist entity that has betrayed the people.

6. Gasoline can, and perhaps should, be viewed as a commodity vital to not only the well-being of the populace, but to the very existance of this nation. Gasoline is as important as water, electricity, air, roads, air traffic, radio, agriculture, firearms, medicine, &c., all of which are or have been controlled and regulated by government.

7. The only reason gasoline prices are not regulated is because.... Wait. Why aren't gasoline prices regulated?

8. It's the government's responsibility to protect the rights of citizenry, and also the rights of Big Oil. The only way to satisfy both responsibilities is to buy Big Oil and run it as a non-profit.

9. That's called "nationalization".

10. Answer this question: how badly do Americans have to be reamed at the pump while watching Big Oil garner record (and obscene by any standard) profits before the "n" word does not seem like a bad idea?

I say it could happen, and soon.

44
So a couple of nights ago, Number 1 son and I were watching Family Guy, and at one point Peter briefly bangs out an accoustic version of Rock Lobster. Number 1 son then did his old man proud by asking, in a slightly awed and excited voice, "Dad... Is that a real song?"

"Why, yes!" I assured him, adding, "I have it on vinyl, but I will be glad to get you a CD later this week. It's by a band called The B-52's, on their first album."

"That's ok... I'll be right back," he threw over his shoulder as he ran up to his room. Ten minutes and less than ten dollars later, he had the album on his iPod, and was marvelling at Planet Claire, Dance This Mess Around, and the iconic Rock Lobster.

I mean, it never occured to him to buy the CD. I asked him, "Don't you want to have the hard copy, like for the cover art, or in case your PC blows up?" His reply was that CDs just get in the way and clutter up his room.

So... What does this portend for the future of CD and DVD sales?

We have at least two mega-musicophiles here. Pbsaurus, Demosthenes -- are you going to continue buying CDs and DVDs to the dieing end, or are you already changing your buying patterns?

How long before these discs of plastic are seen by everyone the same as they are seen by my teenage son -- as completely useless?

I don't know which way to go.

I have a bunch of old 4-track recordings that I want to make into MP3s (or whatever).

A few years ago, someone gave me an old 4-input board and breakout box made by MidiMan (now known as M-Audio). The driver for the board was written for Win-98. I tried for months, on and off, to get that bugger to work, but couldn't. I still have the breakout box, but the board is gone.

What I wanted to do was use audio editing software to record all 4 tracks in parallel. It looks like I can do that with M-Audio's Delta 44 board/breakout box, but it costs around $130. The problem is, after I transfer in all my 4-track stuff, I won't need the board any more. I can see spending maybe half that without a qualm, but $130 seems steep for something I'll basically use once and throw away.

My other options are:

1. Mix down all the songs and just record stereo WAVs, and forget about ever enhancing them (last resort).

2. Try to record 2 tracks at a time and synch them up somehow (which seems like it would be time consuming and unreliable).

What do you folks think I should do?

Are there rules or guidelines that determine which word should be added?

I think it's absurd. We should vote for Governor, US Senator, US Representative and Mayor. Everything else should be decided by the duly elected officials. The Lt. Governor position should be abolished.

I'm surprised they don't have the frikken Dog Catcher on here.

Entertainment / Barat

I saw my first and only ep of the Ali G show on a return flight from Heathrow back in 2002. I also saw an ep or two of The Office (the original British one) on the same flight. As a barometer of my own preference in such things, upon landing I learned everything I could about The Office and Ricky Gervais et al., and today proudly own the DVD box set of the complete series, including specials. The same cannot be said about the Ali G show. I thought it was funny and outrageous, and I think Sasha Cohen has great talent, but in the end I was more bothered by it than entertained. Watching prudish little old ladies being tricked into discussing anal sex didn't advance the human experience for me. I already know everything there is to know about prudish old ladies and anal sex, and the idea that a juxtaposition of the two might be amusing is pretty obvious. But as it turns out, for me anyway, it's more amusing in the abstract. The same goes with coaxing a barfull of Texans into a chorus of "Throw the Jew Down the Well". Yes, I know it can be done, but it means nothing. What galls me is that some are comparing Cohen with groundbreaking and outrageous (for the time) acts like Lenny Bruce and Richard Pryor. I can't agree. In the hands of Bruce and Pryor and a few others, standup became one of the forces driving societal change. What Cohen does is little more than mean-spirited slapstick.

Anyway, let me know how you like the movie.

Anarchy / The Cosmic Joke
« on: November 02, 2006, 03:04:12 PM »
The ultimate Cosmic Joke played on us humans is, of course, our mortal sentience. All other Earthly beings, as far as we know, have no concept of their personal destiny. Whether you believe our self-awareness emerged spontaneously or was granted from up high, it is a cruel, cruel thing to have foisted upon us. Good news: you know you exist! Bad news: you know you will die! Ah, for the blissfull ignorance of beasts and insects.

This is what religion is all about. "WHAT DO YOU MEAN, I'M GONNA DIE?!?!" Yeah, it makes no sense. Why should intelligence evolve only to confront its own irrevocable demise? There must be more to it, right?

Anyway, just wondering how y'all deal with it.
