Pop-Up Stopper Free Edition
« on: November 04, 2003, 10:40:07 PM »

I've been using Pop-Up Stopper Free Edition for about a month now and after a good amount of use, I must say that it is pretty damn good for being a free program. Every now and then some pop ups get through, but not too many. This is the best thing that I have found short of disabling all popups in IE, or switching to Opera or Mozilla.

Do any of you use any other pop up stopping program that you prefer?

I use Ka-RAZZZZY Browser!

I almost never have a problem.  Well...not on my good computer anyway.  I have a few problems on my home computer, but that's because of the computer, not the program.

By the way, this is also free.

Proxomitron is one of the best programs I've ever run across.  And I like MyIE2... it's like CrazyBrowser, but without the annoying bugs.

CrazyBrowser always stole focus from other applications when it was done loading a web page.

I'd click on a link on HN, for example, and since HN's forums can sometimes take a while to load, I would ALT+TAB to an email I was writing, only to find CrazyBrowser on top while I was in the middle of typing something, because it finished loading "General Discussion".  It used to really piss me off.  MyIE2 doesn't do that.

Also, CrazyBrowser would lose the cursor position if I went off of it for any reason.  Like I'd be in the middle of typing a post on a forum or something, and switch to another browser window to copy a URL for instance, and when I go back to the window that had the post I was typing, my cursor would not be in the same spot I left it.  I'd have to take my hand off the keyboard, grab the mouse, and click back on the text box before I could resume typing.

Little things like that get on my nerves... they're basic, basic things that any developer would keep in mind when making an application.  MyIE2 is a lot like CrazyBrowser in that it's an Internet Explorer overlay, and it's tabbed, and it has popup controls... but it doesn't have those two most annoying bugs, plus it has quite a few other features that CB doesn't have, in addition to it being actively supported... whereas CB is a dead project (no new versions are going to be coming out).

Ah!  I see.

Yeah, it does do that.  It's annoying.

I'm glad you noticed those things too.  I was beginning to think that it only happened to me.

The thing is, those kinds of things are really super easy to fix in most apps... which tells me that those who developed CB never really paid much attention to stuff like that. And since it's no longer being supported, there are no chances of even such basic things ever being fixed.

That's why I gave MyIE2 a try, and have upgraded it when they have released new versions, because it keeps getting better.  Plus, there are dookieloads of pretty good skins for it....  :P

What methods do both Crazy Browser and MYIE2 use to block pop ups? Do they have a file with a huge list of URLs that are known popup sites, or do they just block any and all pop up scripts in web pages?

I'm not sure.  I think it blocks the pop up scripts.

Hey Demo...you got a linky dinky?

It just blocks certain types of scripting that creates popups.  Not all kinds.

But that's what I have Proxomitron for.  It picks up where MyIE2 leaves off.

Link to latest version of MyIE2.

I strongly advise against having any of the plugins that come with it enabled... at least one of them ("UCMore") is known spyware, and I've found really weird port activity from having a couple of the other bundled plugins running.

However, if you just go into the MyIE2 options and un-check all of the MyIE2 specific plugins, there isn't a problem.

Oh yeah, another bonus of MyIE2 that CrazyBrowser doesn't have is mouse gestures... I've gotten really used to using them, and the main ones are the same as the ones that Opera uses, so you can switch back and forth between MyIE2 and Opera and use the same the mouse gestures to do the same things...

Suppose once you get to a site, you go to click on a link and the link is of a java popup for a movie, or for composing an email. Is there any way for you to work around that with MyIE2 or Crazy Browser? I know with the Pop Up Stopper Free Edition that I'm using, if you hold down the control key, and re-click the link, it will not block it.

Google toolbar > all. It blocks pop ups AND puts a google search in your toolbar. Though the google deskbar is even better, no pop up blocker on that one though. Doesn't hurt to have both. :)

I actually have both, though I don't use it to block popups, just for searches. I use Zone Alarm (pirated) for that.

Jezebel, you're damn attractive, have good dress sense (Carmen Sandiego), and you knows good software when you sees it.  Can you cook?   Cause I needs me a wife.

I'm sure she's taken, dude. Good looking women are never available for more than two consecutive seconds.

Right, Jez?

I can cook, but I'm taken. I can't resist the call of el geeky boys.

I prefer old fashioned Norton myself. Last time I used Zone Alarm it got all wonky with my wireless. Besides, I'm old and set in me ways.

Didn't I call it, guys? :D

And were you using ZA Pro or the free version? I pirated pro, so I've got less issues...

Goddamn, you're right. We could be evil clone twins, Jez.

Back on topic: I've used Pop-Up Stopper for a while now. And the Google toolbar.
