Issue: Use of GOD in the Pledge of Allegiance
« on: March 24, 2004, 07:26:23 PM »

Ladies & Gentlemen,

For those of you who I have not met, my name is Bruce (AKA: Krunch), and I have recently joined your community.  (Reference my post in the New Geeks on the Block forum )
As I stated in my first post, I enjoy healthy political debate.  One of the things that attracted me to the geekforums was the Political Opinion forum.

I am thinking of a weekly post, sort of a "Hot Issue of the Week" -type thing.  My goal is to create a forum for reasonable debate based on factually correct information.  I hope everyone is mature enough to state their views in a reasonable manner without being disrespectful to others' opinions.
If this succeeds you can expect to see future issues presented each week.

My first Issue of the Week is: The use of GOD in the Pledge of Allegiance
To kick things off, here's a quick Poll to guage people's position on this issue.

Lastly, here's some quick reading to familiarize yourself with the concerns surrounding this issue.

I look forward to a lively debate!

I believe Mr. Nedrow is correct in his assertion that having under god in the pledge of allegiance is unconstitutional based on the establishment clause.  Not being religious, I've always skipped over that part if asked to recite the pledge of allegiance, and it makes me uncomfortable to be expected to do so.

I think the circumstances in which the phrase was inserted into the pledge speak for themselves.

Obviously this is an outdated pledge and needs to be changed in order to reflect upon our new, enlightened state of mind. Therefore, I propose that we change it to "One nation, under Cthulhu....."

No question about it.  References to a divisive deity do not belong on money, courthouses, any other public property, presented by any government agency or office in any "official" capacity, and certainly not in the "official" pledge of allegiance of this country.

As far as I'm concerned, that's a no-brainer.  I've always wondered how it lasted as long as it has.

What a lot of people fail to notice is that in addition to defying the establishment clause, it also is in violation of the "free exercise thereof" clause regarding religion.

Making it the official "god" of this country interferes with the religious practices of all citizens that may not worship that same god.

From what I understand, Congress stuck in this phrase back during the 50's during the whole communist scare thing. That seems a bit outdated. The original pledge was just fine, and I don't see the need to keep it modified. Unless it's now critical to national security to separate us from those "godless terrorists."

I have no opinion.

Is it entanglement? Yes.
Is it excessive entanglement? Hm......

Well just remember separation of church and state was set up to protect the church. *explodes in laughter*

Which is why Americans United a religious freedom organization headed by Reverend Linn is supporting Newdow in this one.

It should be something like "Under Nike" or "Under Clearchannel", or something like that.  I'd hate to say it, but to the government, and most americans, god is dead.  Religion in this country is a joke, and the pledge of allegiance, believe it or not, was created out of a template written by a socialist way back when.  why, in a country of "Freedom", must we pledge allegience to a piece of cloth, the things it stands for, or the nation of idiots that support it?  Drop the entire thing, and stop brainwashing the students.  I stopped saying the pledge of allegiance long ago.  I don't mean to sound "un-american", but guess what... this country sucks.  This country was bought and paid for long ago.  i wish i could move elsewhere, like canada, where the international fuckups aren't going to risk me getting my ass caught in a truck-sized fertilizer bomb's blast radius as it detonates.
