A time I was very lucky about 12 months ago
« on: March 25, 2005, 02:14:10 PM »

I dont know if you guys and gals know about someone called Ray Mears, he does a survival tv  program over here

( notice the spelling, i would normally spell it properly, programme, but hey )

Anyway it was my birthday, and my fantastic sister asked me what present I wanted. And I asked for the DVD series of "Extreme survival" by Ray Mears. "Man arrives in jungle, armed only with a toothpick and a bit of string, yet builds entire city from string"

You get the idea

So I watch the DVDs, lots, get bored, put them to one side and forget about them.

Two months later, I get a phone call

{Ray Mears company} Hi you have won the competition

{me} Huh

{me} What competition

{Ray Mears company} Hi you have won the competition

{me} I am making this difficult for you I have entered no competition.

{Ray Mears company} are you < your name here >

{me} yes < SUDDENLY thinks>,  cool, gotta be worth a free DVD or a T-Shirt

{Ray Mears company} By purchasing the DVD you were automatically entered into the draw,

< holds breathe, maybe $50 money as well>

{Ray Mears company} And you will be going to the North Pole with Ray Mears, actually you will only get within 75KM of the pole, but it will be an 8 day Arctic Survival course, each day you will build a different type of shelter, stay in it that night, hunt and fish for your own food, learn to ride a skidoo, you will have to take a test to get your Swedish Hunting license, temperatures down to -50C and see the Northern Lights.

{me} gulp, err wow thanks.

And it was life changingly brilliant

I know < sigh >

I did take three disposable cameras,  one was lost in a skidoo accident, and the -50C temperatures did for the films in the other 2.

There were about 12 of us, some quite keen photographers. But the problems were twofold

If you kept the camera "warm" i.e. inside clothing near your body, and then whipped it out for a shot, the lens would freeze over instantly, milky white photo.

If you let the camera achieve room temperature, which only takes about 20 secs, the time was often used cleaning the lens, then either the shutter would freeze or the film would get damaged.

I am sure proper photograpers know the right equipment, but  they dont sell it at terminal 6 of Stockholm or Kiruna airport

I do have one photo, that Ray arranged at the last airfield we landed at, a big group shot, but I dont have it scanned, in fact it is hanging on my parents wall as a thank you for their financial assistance in getting me there ( althouth the trip was free, the survival equipment still had to be bought )

The Northern Lights, completely eerie experience, needs temperatures of -30c before it happens. incidently up to -10c snow "crunches" when you walk on it, below that it "squeeks", really.

Getting the first stages of hypothermia in a quinzee (sp?) the equivalent of an igloo ( but you cant build igloos in the north, too cold and dry, the snow is too powdery to cut blocks out of )

We worked in teams of two, a "buddy", you have to, for instance you cant see frostbite on your own face. Plus when you get frostbite you use his body heat to solve it, your foot in his armpit for example

I'd rather hone my survival instincts at a Hawaiian resort. Sounds like quite an experiance though.

It would have been funny if you ended up eating him to survive.

He did have quite a lot of fat on him, I wouldnt have fancied that much.

Besides we had to try to eat 10,000 calories a day, thats an awful lot of dead animal, he wouldnt have lasted long.

I have completely lost track of all topics in which Graham is involved with, as I am mesmerized by his Trent picture.

Aaaah but the Trent has a silent "Reznor" at the end, sorta like facade without the front

People named Trent can't possibly be cool. They become physics geeks and things like that.
