Lost USB Drives in ME
« on: May 03, 2005, 02:13:23 PM »

Hello to all from the latest newbie.  I have a problem with WinME that I know you're all dying to discuss, and it's been driving me mad for about 6 months.
Whenever I plug in a removable USB storage device, the comp recognizes it in device manager, but I can't use it 'cos it doesn't appear in windows explorer.  It used to work just fine, then one day it just stopped displaying the drive icon.  What's up guys?

Your USB controller RAM is probably burned out.  It's not a big deal; that's actually pretty common.

We don't usually discuss WinME... But try your device in another PC to confirm Demo's hunch.

Well one way to tell for sure is to see what kind of motherboard he has.

Can you pop the case open?  I can tell you what to look for.

OK thanks guys.  Perhaps now I should mention that if I boot the comp up with a USB memory stick in it, or my camera etc, it all works fine.  Once started in this way, USB removable drives can be plugged in or out in the usual way, as long as I don't shut down.  Any more clues now?

OooKaayyy, and I thought I was going to get some help,  Oh well.

Just in case this is really a genuine forum for people with real problems who think that there are people in this world who enjoy a challenge with our modern tecnology, and might be willing to share their two-penneth with us poor sufferers.....

I've noticed on other postings that lots of people have trouble with Windows allocating too many things to a single IRQ.  I've had a look at mine and sure enough, the USB controllers are on IRQ5, along with 2 sound drivers and a bunch of other stuff.  If I try to alter the IRQ's for any of these things I get an error message from Windows telling me I can't do that.  Could this overcrowding though, be the root of my problem?

IRQ 0   System timer   OK
IRQ 1   Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural Keyboard   OK
IRQ 2   Programmable interrupt controller   OK
IRQ 3   Communications Port (COM2)   OK
IRQ 4   Communications Port (COM1)   OK
IRQ 5   ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering   OK

IRQ 5   Creatix WDM Modem Driver   OK
IRQ 5   Creative SB Live! series(WDM)   OK
IRQ 6   Standard Floppy Disk Controller   OK
IRQ 7   EPSON Printer Port (LPT1)   OK
IRQ 8   System CMOS/real time clock   OK
IRQ 9   SCI IRQ used by ACPI bus   OK
IRQ 10   ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering   OK
IRQ 10   VIA Rhine III Fast Ethernet Adapter   OK
IRQ 11   ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering   OK
IRQ 11   NVIDIA GeForce2 MX/MX 400   OK

Ok here is how you fix your problems, its really simple. Buy Windows Xp Pro or Home, but whatever you do replace Windows ME, because ME was so bad its . . . . .  yeah just replace it. My brother's laptop had the same problem, i upgrade his dell laptop to Windows Xp Pro and the computer runs like a champ now.

my mother & father-inlaw use ME on their PCs..and I get calls at least twice a week asking why something wont work...and they have owned computers for YEARS...so they aren't geeks...but at least know what NOT to do...and YET I can not convince them to even go for Windows2000..*sigh*

I know a few other people who use ME as well...and they say 95 was better
