Core Geek Movies
« on: December 17, 2008, 07:56:42 PM »

Some friends and I have discovered, much to our amazement, that some members of our group are not geeks. They hold the knowledge of games, hardware and science, but lack the all important geek culture. So we came up with the idea to indocturnate them into geekdom with the "Geek" movis that are quoted and referenced all so much, or are just pure utter geek. So far we have twenty-five movies on the list (We excluded the obvious ones most have seen such as Star Trek and Star Wars.) focusing mostly on the late eighties to the early nineties, with some current movies on the list for fresh air. However there is some. . .thing missing and cannot think of what it is, so we thought to post here for suggestions and recomendations, with much thanks for you assistance in educating these hopeful people.
Here is the list currently:
1.   The Thing
2.   Into the Mouth of Madness
3.   Blade Runner
4.   Tremors
5.   Tron
6.   The Last Starfighter
7.   Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight
8.   Mystery Science Theater 3000
9.   Serenity
10. Rocky Horror Picture Show
11. A Clockwork Orange
12. V for Vendetta
13. Leon (The Professional)
14. Willow
15. Super MArio Bros.
16. Minority Report
17. Who Framed Roger Rabbit
18. The Crow
19. The Boondock Saints
20. Highlander
21. The Flight of the Navigator
22. The Wizard
23. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
24. Evil Dead
25. Monster Squad
26. 2001 Space Odyssey
27. 12 Monkeys

I didn't see Star Trek IV on your list.
Also, you seem to be missing Xanadu.

I shall think of more later.

You're also conspicuously missing "Conan The Barbarian".

Why in the world would the Star Wars sextilogy not be on the list? Is it now uncool to even mention Star Wars?

I don't get it.

Right?

Let's prune it first. Why would Roger Rabbit, Boondock Saints and Mutant Turtles be on the list, and not every other movie ever made?

Roger Rabbit is not a bad movie at all.  Not everyone should be expected to "get it", of course.  Not a geek movie, necessarily, but certainly not bad.

I enjoyed Who Framed Roger Rabbit.  But it certainly isn't a geek movie.

The list of 27 however doesn't really have much geek in it at all.  I would only classify three, tops, as geek movies.

Not including Repo Man and The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across The Eight Dimension are a major travesty.

Ha! You reminded me.

"Killer Clowns from Outer Space" needs to be on that list.
Also, "Real Genius", the entire "Mad Max" series, and the original "War of the Worlds".

Oh, and "Nosferatus".

Mostly we avoided the movies that either EVERYone had seen or had their own followings, Which is why Star Wars, Star Trek, Mad Max, Matrix, Any Sean Penn movie, Monty Python, Kevin Smith. And TMNT is undeniably a Geek movie of the early nineties, any child of that era will concur, Boondock Saints because it has been referenced several times during games, and Roger Rabbit because it's an abbrviation of cartoon shorts. Though you are right Hackers and Buckaroo most definatly should have been on there.

...Roger Rabbit because it's an abbrviation of cartoon shorts.
That doesn't change anything. It's not a core geek movie, like, say, "SpaceBalls". Being an abbreviation of cartoon shorts doesn't qualify it for anything.

What about "Timecop", "Demolition Man", "Terminator" or the original "Day the Earth Stood Still"?

And you can't possibly be trying to limit core geek movies to late eighties, early ninties. That's just absurd. Think of all the old greats, "Mars Attacks", or "Creature from the Black Lagoon".

The point some of us are trying to make is that, regardless of how popular the film might have been, it is still a core geek movie, like "Monty Python". If you're going to make a list of core geek movies you can't omit it just because it was popular.

Also, there is a whole population where I live that has never even heard of "Mad Max". And I still think you should hack TMNT off that list and I am a child of that "era".

Mad Max is my favourite movie to watch when I have my period.

Also, I think that the Boondock Saints is acceptable for the geeks list, but I'm amazed that Revenge of the Nerds, Real Genius and Judge Dredd aren't on this list.
