12AX7, BizB, Demosthenes: Thanks, Dudes.

If I'm forgetting someone here: Thank you, too.

And also: Thanks, Pop, for what you did in Normandy when you were my son's age.

Edited to clarify: ...when you were your grandson's age.

My own service was mostly self-interest motivated.  It was the only way for me to afford any sort of education whatsoever at the time, after being screwed over financially by my father after I moved out at a young age.

That said, it was not without a certain amount of patriotism and enthusiasm that I joined the US Navy.  Naval tradition has always been something that fascinated me, and I wasn't disappointed.

You mean being on boats for long periods of time with men, just men, for many days at a time? Up on the deck with lots of men, or down in the galley with lots of men?

Cherubim is plural; Genesis 3:24 specifies one flaming sword. Presumably flaming swords were in short supply."

Yes, thank you guys very much.  And also both my grandpa's who fought in WW2.  One of them had to forge a parent signature to get in because he had a bad eye.

A long time ago, the Red Army tried to draft me, as it did most male Soviet citizens, but I got out of it on account of not actually being a Soviet citizen. It was laugh riot. I should tell you that story some time.

Wait... I just did.

So when was that?  Was it too early for you to have been sent to Afghanistan?

1974, peacetime.  I actually would not have minded, but there was no chance -- I was a US citizen.

Still am.

Well, you're welcome and thank you for the expression of gratitude. Those things mean a lot to me. I did enlist to serve my country and it's people and for no other reason; and it sort of validates my belief in the 'greatness' of the people here to know that the service given by myself and others is realized and appreciated. For me, at least, it's expressions such as yours that made it all much more than worthwhile. So, "you're welcome" and "Thanks."
