I'm serious if you are.

I take cooking and baking very seriously. I don't do much of it myself, but I'm married to a serious (and exceptional) cook.

I am wary of "gonzo" and "x-treme" cooks. Throwing weird ingredients together for shock value isn't cooking.

I am also wary of cooks who think they can skip learning the basics. It's ok to try to improve on the classics -- but you have to know them first.

Strawberry-poivre-balsamic-chocolate cake may be good, but so is a perfectly executed classic chocolate cake.

Or how about a bona-fide Angel Food cake?

Yup, I am.

I know the basics and some more (yay for summer culinary school!), so don't worry, I don't make giant blobs of questionable giggly/slimy things. And yes, I agree that a perfectly simple chocolate cake can sometimes be the best.

The extreme stuff is mostly me messing with flavor combinations (in an otherwise traditional recipe) more than anything where parts are known to work well in the first place. For instance, strawberries go well with both black pepper and balsamic vinegar, which goes well with dark chocolate. As does chocolate and strawberries. So, I made a cake (at her request) to try and combine all these together (and, there was a strategy to it).

I get a lot of my inspiration from chocolatiers who use different spices and whatnot.

Unlike my sister, who once tried to boil balls of cookie dough.

Well, I'm glad I didn't give you a stroke from thinking I did otherwise.

As for the cake, you can always put banana slices in between cake layers (or a banana cream) -or not.

I say frost it yellow and put a big 'S' on it to make it LOOK like a skittle (since eating them on a cake, if you refridgerate it when you're done, will get hard and hence hard to eat).

I can cook, but I'm a complete 'tard when it comes to baking. And there's an enormous difference between "cooking" and "baking".

I can follow a procedure. That's the extent of my skills. Lately, to deal with the massive and rather unexpected success of my vegetable garden this summer, I've been making lots of zucchini bread.

That's the pinnacle of my baking skills. That, and I managed to get my grandmother's apple pie recipe out of her before she passed away. I can make that too.

Pastel de tres leches is one of the best ever. The problem for me is that it's too sweet for me, so I add a little lime juice to the milk mixture and whipped cream.

But omg, it's amazing...a diabetic and/or lactose-intolerant person's sweet, sweet hell.

um...did you go to the doctor? it could actually be fractured. not much you can do if it is, but they can get you some heavy-duty painkillers if nothing else.
