VD 2011
« on: February 16, 2011, 02:07:14 AM »

Yesterday did not go as planned.

Valentine's day is my wife's favourite holiday. I always try to pull off some kind of spectacular stunt, like secretly fill the house with pink balloons, or giant Valentine posters or something. But this year, I was incapacitated by some kind of vicious so-called cold that caused me to lose 19 days out of the last 3 weeks. Other, more mundane things became pressing, like overdue oil changes for our vehicles. To make things worse, my wife was stricken by the same plague, negating any plans we might have made. Yesterday I felt better -- good enough to go to work for almost a whole day, and also get the two oil changes, and also...

So here's the thing. Four or five weeks ago, a beloved cat that we adopted a few years ago became ill. He was old. The vet did everything possible, but his decline was unstoppable. This cat was primarily my son's, so yesterday, when my wife and I realized that the time had come, we waited until my son came home after his nighttime Japanese class to let him make the final call. We took a ride to the local overnight animal clinic and put the fine feline to rest.

So yesterday was sad, and did not go as planned, but... that's life.

And so it goes.

Oh man. I'm so sorry to hear that.
Animals can be like a family member. I lost my best friend last year; an old cat. Had him for 16 years.
Came home from work one morning and found him in the driveway. I cried like a child for hours.

And watching a loved one (like your son) hurt is a tough thing to endure. Powerlessness to help
sometimes feels as bad as the hurt you want to allay.
My sincere condolences to your family.

Thank you, Banshee. It's amazing how these things get to you.

Yes, Detta, that is exactly what we're going to do. The county will have one less cat to kill this year.
