What is a Geek?

In this edition of http://www.gotthegeek.com/list.php?title=Geek%20Guides&listfile=geekguides_list.txt">Geek Guides: Help For The Modern Geek, we'll take a look at what it takes to be a true geek.

"What exactly is a geek?" you might ask yourself.

According to http://www.dictionary.com" TARGET="BLANK">Dictionary.com, a geek is a person regarded as foolish, inept, or clumsy. (or) A person who is single-minded or accomplished in scientific or technical pursuits but is felt to be socially inept. This, as we know, is not true. A true geek has a certain life style that he or she has to live in order to be truly classified as a geek.

First, sleeping habits. As some of you may know, Lacerda is notorious around these corners of the internet for getting little or no sleep at all some nights, and sleeping for days on end for no reason at all. Your average geek will sleep about 6 hours when he or she has work or school the next day, and an average of about 10 to 12 hours if he or she is on vacation. Most of the time being awake is consumed in front of the computer.

This takes us to our next category: the computer. A geek's computer is like a harpooner's harpoon. Without it, a geek is not a geek, just like a harpooner isn't a harpooner without a harpoon. A geek's computer at all costs should not connect to the internet via AOL. If AOL is installed on a geeks computer, the computer's hard drive must be formatted at once in order to cleanse it of the vial software. A geek's computer should also not be an Alienware, Dell, Compaq or any other brand like that. A geek's computer should be hand tailored of only the best parts at the time of construction.

Our next category is food: A Geek's diet does not consist of much. Milk and vegetables are out of the question. Contrary to what many believe, a happy life doesn't have to contain good, healthy food. It just has to contain good food. Pizza, candy, soda, anything that tastes good. Don't worry about calories or carbohydrates - if it's good, eat it. You only live once, who cares if you're 300 pounds. Your significant other might care, but that's only if you care.

Finally, clothing. A geek's clothing isn't that important. A geek does not wear clothing that is 6 sizes to large for him or her, nor 2 sizes too small for him or her. A geek will also not wear clothing like a Goth would. If a geek wears gothic clothing, they are not a geek, they are a Goth.

It's a lifestyle, not a state of mind. It's not one of those things that you can take up like a diet, or a hobby, you are either born a geek and don't notice it right away, or you're something else. If you notice you demonstrate the above, you very well maybe a geek.

I fall as a quasi-geek.  I do not have a comp built to my own specs... unfortunately, i can't afford one.  and my tastes in food are a tad off.

i know plenty

tho most aren't quite as computer-geeky as other computer geeks or myself are.

type 'a' goth geeks are usually the ones who are in it for the fashion & history, and not so much as the lifestyle. these goth geeks are usually fun & carefree folks to hang around. (re: http://www.mimir.net/factions/sensates.html)

type 'b' goth geeks are geeks who dress in black (w/o the intention of actually displaying how "goth" they may be feeling at the time) moreso to hide in shadows of industrial clubs (if they happen to be out at all) and either observe life from a distance or purely mind their own business; i.e. antisocial. (re: http://www.mimir.net/factions/bleakers.html, and http://www.mimir.net/factions/athar.html.)

type 'c' goth geeks are a somewhat balanced mix of the two. they may be either extroverts or just plain neutral to either party around them. they usually tend to spend most of their time alone, yet fully dislike the whole 'moping' idea in public environments. when they do go out, they know how to have a good time and usually know everyone in the club. (re:

imo even metal geeks seem to follow a similar trend.

I don't think you have any idea what a 'geek' is, actually.

Mostly geekish but I have a Gateway, and I occasionally drink milk. *hangs head in shame*

Sleeping habits: Check.
Custom-built computer: Check.
Devil-may-care diet: Who cares about calories or carbohydrates? I love vegetables, though, and haven't had take-out pizza or a cheeseburger in four months.
Wardrobe: Check. Goth-free and all my size.

Verdict: Mostly geek.

It's interesting, because these rules can be applied to al-kees as well. Just look at my friend, the Spanish drunk.
