Rant: Why my ISP fucking sucks

I use Optimum Online as my ISP. I've had them for about 5 or 6 years now, and they have provided me with pretty good service up until about two months ago.

The reason being is that sometimes (for 2 - 3 hour blocks) I will have sporadic internet access. I'll have a connection for 5 minutes, lose it for another 5 minutes, back for another 2, off for 8 more, and this goes on and on for about 3 hours at times. On several occasions of not being able to put up with their bullshit anymore, I called them up and explained my problem to them. Each and every time they would say, "It must be your splitter/wiring that is causing packet loss!" or "It must be your router! You need to buy a new router!"

Guess what? I have worked around each and every one of their suggested problems just to make them happy, and still the same problem persists. Do you know how annoying this is when trying to upload files, or better yet, in the heat of the moment while looking at porn???  :cry:

Oh well, what the hell do they care? They get their money and they're happy. End of story.

Does anyone else have any similar problems regarding their ISP? If so, did you resolve the problem, and how?

My parents' Internet was doing nearly the same thing a little while back; they had to call one of the techs to the house to monkey with the wiring.

I've had similar problems before. The techs came over a few times, could never find a problem in my house, but always ended up "fixing" things up in the telephone pole. I'd be good for a little bit, and after a while the same thing would happen. After a while, i got tired of calling them so I switch company. Never had a single issue since.

Yeah, I had problems with my cable internet once.  You have to turn the modem on.

I haven't had a single problem with Charter since moving to the north side. Not for Internet, not for television. It's eerie.

I ordered a new service from my ISP that will give me a 30/2mbps connection, as well as a new modem which finally got here today. I go to hook it up and guess what. It doesn't fucking work.

I called them up and stated the problem, and they said that it was due to there not being a strong enough signal going into my house. This is pretty much a common thing in my area since everything is fairly old around here.

Why the fuck would they sell me a product and service that I cannot use until I go out of my way to call them about it? What if I was one of those people who know next to nothing about computers? I might still be sitting there near the modem waiting for it to connect.

Assholes.

I found out what was wrong... turns out the service is not ready in my area... but for some reason they decided to sell it to me.

Hey, I'm setting up a new office on a jobsite.  Two new trailers and I need 4 dedicated lines, two for each.  So while I'm doing this I ask about a dsl line since the job is going to be two years long and the company is buying me a new laptop for use on the job.

They took the order for the dsl but I won't know whether they have it until they send the crews out to install the lines for the phones.

I mean I understand ya' gotta' be close enough to a digital drop to have it, but for god's sake this is the frickin' phone company.  They don't even know how close they have a drop to the only school in the town.

It's roughly 55 dollars a month, which isn't too bad. The next thing on my list is to get them to open port 80 since that was part of the deal. It was advertised that when you get the Optimum Online Boost service you can legally run web and email servers from your connection.

Imagine, if you will, that I love on a small island (roughly 22 square miles of land) with 60,000 inhabitants.  Imagine that this island is ~620 miles due east of Cape Hatteras, NC.  Imagine that we have 4 ISPs to choose from, but only one local telephone service provider.  DSL here is expensive and of poor service.  Why?  First, all telephone cables run under the ocean between NY and here, and another set runs between FL and here.  If anything happens to the underground pipeline (as it does), we have to grin & bear it until it gets replaced- which can take a matter of weeks.  Add to that the costs.  Every month, we pay about $40 to our ISPs for 128k access, $60 for 256k, and about $90 for 512.  We also have to pay our TELCO for a leased line (basically an open pipe)- $99 for 256k up & down, and $119 for 512 up & down.  I'm on a 512k account, so I'm paying $208 for crappy 512 access with regular hiccups & disconnects.

I envy people on mainlands.

It would be pretty cost prohibitive, from what I was given to understand.  There's also a local satellite company that would probably try to claim that any satellite linkups would have to go through them... for a charge of course.  The problem with living in a place this small is there are lots of monopolies around, and the local government doesn't help much, since their pockets are lined quite well by said monopolies.
