Moved to the country
« on: May 18, 2007, 07:24:38 PM »

I finally made the transition from Matawan, New Jersey to Hellertown, Pennsylvania. The transition was hard, and the drive was long and boring, but I'm finally here in Hellertown.

I spent several days out here fighting with the cable modem attempting to get it to work. I finally got fed up and called my new ISP (Service Electric) who figured out that the problem was within the modem itself, not the wiring or settings that I had first thought. Luckily I never sent back my old cable modem, so I had the guy swap MAC addresses and I was good to go.

Honestly, I am surprised at the speed that I am getting from this cable connection. I took some pictures for you guys to show you why I am surprised at the speed:

I have a lot of work ahead of me yet, but my room is pretty much unpacked, and so is my other computer equipment in the basement. Slowly but surely this place is starting to feel more and more like home.

Oh, that says goats.

Looks pretty cool.  I'd like to go rural sometime.  I used to love riding my bike through Yolo county back when I was in Davis.

How far is it to civilization?  Do you at least have a decent grocery store nearby?

I read the title and finished the line with  "Gonna eat me a lot of peaches."

It'll be a while before that song gets out of my head

Civilization is only about 10 minutes away, and the grocery store is only another 5 minutes into civilization.

The only bad part is that when it snows, I'm afraid that I'm screwed. It's uphill all the way.

I'll keep taking pictures for you guys. It's a pretty interesting area. I'm about 15 minutes away from the old Bethlehem Steel mill, too. I'm sure that will make for some good pictures.

Sweet man!  It looks like a kickass place.

It must rock being so close, yet so far from normality.  I'm definately aiming for something like that in the years to come.

I take it you don't own any of the pictured livestock?  Living near a farm?

You're living my dream.

It looks beautiful! All that wide open space, a nice big house, nature all around you...wow.

Yea, it's not bad at all. I was hard leaving everything behind in New Jersey, especially my girlfriend. But her and I will make it work out, I know it. We're only 80 miles away from each other, so it's not a bad drive.

The livestock belong to the people next to me. I have no idea what they do with them, to be honest. It's only one cow, so I don't know how much milk they can possibly get out of him/her!

May I suggest you take your shoes off and then you'll have a real neat story to annoy your grandkids with.

... and it'll be true this time.

So if you're in Hellertown PA, that means you live less than half an hour from me. <3

Where do you live in PA? Or are you in western New Jersey?

Her I'd think, as far as I'm aware milk cows are female.  And they probably get just enough to use a day, which is a cool idea.

From the looks of it, where I live in Hellertown yields only a 10 to 15 minute drive to Trexlertown.

I grew up in the country so I can definitely appreciate it.  We were only about 20 minutes from town, but we had all the anemities:  corn and soy bean fields as our neighbors, horses, no cable and DSL only available as recently as 2005, and coyotes.

Probably not for a while, at least. Through there is a trough in the back yard that has been left there by the people before us. I've always wondered why that is there...
