True. I can guess.  I have no idea if my guess of Hells Bells will be right, though.
Actually it was Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin.

Did you hear anything?

I tried the entire Brown Bomber album; the only thing I could make out at all was a small part in The Lemon Song that sounds like he says, "Felix! Save my life!" :-D

I also edited a cassette recording of Stairway to Heaven to try and listen to it backwards and learned that can't be done (it can with the right equipment (4-track); but not with a regular cassette and regular cassette deck (2-track)); kicking off my fascination with recording, analog tape, and the physics of it all.

I heard the sound of my life coming to an end as my mother found out we had ruined her favourite album because we didn't know what we were doing.

Does that count?

Thanks for the correction.  I remember seeing it a couple times as a kid on latenight TV long before the invasion of the infomercials.  Yes, children, there was such a time.  Back then I even had to get off my butt to change the channel (either that or coerce and/or bribe a sibling into doing it).  You young whippersnappers just don't realize how easy you have it.

Yep!

In fact, that's how I first saw this trainwreck of a movie, directed by none other than the late great Bob Clark himself.

Negative.

They look too nice next to the blue pair from the Swedish tourist and the annoying Chinese dude's brown ones.

IDK, as I don't know the band and I'd have to listen to their entire discography to make an accurate judgement.

I think you've pretty much heard their entire discography.

That makes me kind of sad. There are so many amazing Eagles songs; not to say that "Journey of the Sorcerer" isn't a great piece, but I think they've got at least a few songs that surpass it.  :|

Well, by all means, name one.

I have no intention of getting into an "Eagles Suck No They Don't" argument, so I will put aside my resentment over a 40-year history of wall-to-wall Eagles onslaught on LA-area FM radio stations.

But I will say this: They were OK as Ms. Ronstadt's backup band. They were OK as a hip house-party band in Laurel Canyon in the early 70s. They were, undeniably, a seminal band, and David Geffen owes them everything. As does Jackson Browne. As does Joe Walsh. They were probably largely responsible for  several genres, including Adult-Oriented-Pop and Easy Listening. They were the Michael Jacksons of 70s mellow country western LA pop. They were huge.

But good God Almighty, their music sets my teeth on edge.

You know the whole punk rebellion of the late 70s, when dinosaur rock was kicked to the curb and the kids took back the music?
The Eagles are responsible for that, too. They were largely responsible for provoking the rebellion.

Nonetheless, Journey of the Sorcerer is awesome. Too bad Bernie Leadon, who wrote it, had to leave the band on account of being Ronald Reagan's daughter's boyfriend.

Look, I understand your affection for the Eagles. They were a pop powerhouse, and produced many wonderful tunes. But you didn't have to live through the entire goddam seventies inundated by relentless wave after wave of Eagles pouring out of the radio speakers. I have heard Hotel motherfucking California and New Kid In Town more times than I have flossed my teeth.

And I floss daily.

Then it appears we have different tastes in music. I wasn't calling out your taste, just saying it makes me sad. It makes me sad whenever somebody whose opinion I value shows such disdain for something I enjoy so much. You ask me to name one better Eagles song; I can name at least five I think are better, but I see no point in doing so because it's not going to change your opinion, and I very much doubt that your response will be "Ah, right, I forgot that one!"

I'll just go sit in my corner and caress my vinyl frisbees.

Oh, for Heaven's sake -- this wasn't meant to be acrimonious! I should post smilies when I get strident, like JoeSixpack does.

 :-)

As I said, I had two problems with the Eagles back in the day. One -- saturation. You could not escape them in the 70s and 80s. Two -- their fans. When geeks and nerds started getting into punk and new wave, the feathered-hair brown-mustache set called them fags and cranked up the Eagles and the Jackson Brownes and the Lynyrd Skynyrds and the Jimmy Buffets and the Bruce Springsteens... It was a dark time.

I know you're hearing the Eagles with fresh, unspoiled ears. That's only good.

I still say Journey of the Sorcerer is a standout. Maybe because I like banjo. Maybe because it combines folk and classical sounds. Maybe because it never got airplay (which is why most people don't even realize it's an Eagles song).

And to be entirely truthful, at this point in my life, when an Eagles song is played on any of the classic rock stations I listen to, I actually listen to it. They're not bad.

Which five songs do you like better?
