Personally, I'm all for a good, tasty salad; until the tomatoes and cheese start to complain that the rich, white lettuce has most of the bowl.
A melting pot sounds ok until you realize eventually everything tastes the same, looks the same or similar, and has only one 'character', and of course, that sux.
Oil and water is just plain nasty, and always will be.

Dude, don't bogart the bong.

I hate when people claim that we're a melting pot. We're not. We're a marinade. "Become like us now, but we're not going to put any effort into learning what you are".

I think it was Upton Sinclair who referred to immigrants in America as zebra stripes, referring to the fact that many immigrants choose to live in the same area as other people of their race. So in the end they separate cities into different areas, each area with a different race.
marinading is an interesting idea though, because certain Americans do plenty of "tenderizing"

"Become like us now, but we're not going to put any effort into learning what you are".
What do you mean by that? ..."effort into learning what you are" I'm not sure I follow ya. You mean the US not learning who the immigrants are? I don't get it. As far as I can tell, multi-culturalism is more than welcome here.
My opinion is I don't think anyone has to become like us at all; but (if we're using the 'salad bowl') you ARE in a SALAD- not a soup or a salsa; and you WILL have the SAME dressing on everything. Beyond that; you're free to be as much a tomato as you want to be; or a cheese, or any combination thereof. But there has to be a general consensus that it's a salad, and everyone uses the same dressing. A little pride in being part of the tastiest salad around wouldn't hurt, either.
