Title: He really doesn't get it!
Post by: BizB on November 26, 2008, 06:57:17 PM
Bawbwa Wawa is airing an interview with Barack Obama tonight at 10pm.  In said interview, she asks him if there are sacrifices that the typical Amurikan can make to assist in the economic recovery.  His answer was...

Quote
The first thing is for the Amurikan people to draw on that reservoir of confidence and stick-to-it-ness and perseverance that my grandparents had during much tougher times in the great depression - to feel confident that we're going to get through these times. but each of us have a role to play in not being wasteful when it comes to energy - for us to turn off the lights when we leave the house, to make sure that we're unplugging the charger that we're using on our cell phones, buying a fuel efficient car, make sure that the tire pressure is proper so that we're not using as much gasoline.  All those things add up and can make an enormous difference.

WHAT?
Excuse me?  Is he really under the impression that energy conservation is the key to our economic recovery?  Wouldn't it make more sense for him to tell Aumrikans to keep spending and keep paying their mortgage and, unless they're laid off or fired, they should do everything they can to keep consuming as they normally would.  Keep applying for car loans.  Keep taking out student loans.  Don't put your money under a rock.  Keep it in circulation.

Yeah.

That's the guy we elected to be our next president. Good going Amurika.

Wrong. The answer to Amurika's problems is a fascist government.

The only thing fascists are good for is being assassinated.

I hate how people constantly blame things on and bash the president. We live in a DEMOCRACY, folks. You have a certain modicum of power in all of this, too. The fact that you're too lazy to make an effort to effect any change in the way things are done means YOU are not doing your job. It is within the hands of the people to put pressure on the government; write your senators, sign petitions, protest, etc. But Americans are just so content to sit on their asses in front of their televisions and watch Fox news and blame the President like good little peons...it's a bit sickening, actually.

Remember the good old days, when people marched and protested and actually made their government change things? Even in modern times - look at the French government. The French protest ALL THE TIME - and they see the changes they want. Get up and DO something before you bash the President (especially when he hasn't even taken office yet).

The problem is, people have methodically stripped themselves of any effect. Both voters and the media are, in general, strong supporters of the two-party system... so in any given race, you have two choices that are nominated for you by two powerful politico organizations.
Then we've put so much weight on the Presidential race (or, every so often, 'crucial' ballot measures like Prop. 8) that everything else kind of fades into the background.
So we're at the point where the collective "political voice" of the nation is reduced to a single binary decision made every 4 years.

The 2-party system really has made it impossible for most Americans to move for any sort of meaningful change.

http://www.omgjonx.com/Y490_final_full_2.pdf is a research paper I wrote last spring concerning the relationships between political parties and the electoral process.  It's somewhat of a long read (and needs some more work), but it lays out the big issues and why we are now helpless.

Ultimately, it all comes down to two things: the 1896 elections and the 1996 Supreme Court Timmons v. Twin Cities Area New Party decision, both of which have to do with fusion balloting (i.e. the ability for minor parties to incorporate candidates from major parties on their own tickets as well.)

We live in a DEMOCRACY, folks.

Actually, as a point of information, we don't live in a democracy, we live in a Constitutional Republic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constitutional_republic).

And considering the reluctance of those representatives to pay any heed at all to the Constitution, the "Constitutional" part of that is questionable at this point.

Any thoughts on his potential pick for Education Secretary:  Linda Darling-Hammond?

Link (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/02/us/politics/02web-darlinghammond.html?_r=1&scp=2&sq=Linda%20Darling%20Hammond&st=cse)

Please convince me I'm wrong but...how would you feel if someone who had your job for ONE YEAR was put in charge of everyone in America with your job?

That's the weird way education works on all levels.  People with little classroom experience make policies for the way the classrooms are run.  Government is so inefficient.

I have an idea, let's make the government in charge of more things!!!

That statement alone qualifies you for office.

Sweet.

I ran for President of Hackernetwork once.  But I didn't win.  I didn't lose either.  PeyoteCoyote wouldn't break the tie.

Really?  The man hasn't even taken office yet and you can't wait for him to be gone?  I've asked it before, and I'll ask it again...what is so bloody wrong with giving the guy there merest smidgen of a chance before deciding that he's the ruination of all that is good and holy?

That's the sad state of affairs in this country. Petulant idiot celebrities screaming about how they're going to move out of the United States because Bush won the 2000 election and idiots that start the count down clock before Obama even takes the oath.

It's because he's black.

EDIT: He's actually more like a butterscotch color if you really think about it.

All due respect, 12, given your track record of vehement anti-obamaness, how was I supposed to know you were kidding this time?
