Title: Best Way to Find A Song's Name
Post by: Arnox on July 01, 2010, 01:01:39 AM
Have you ever heard a song on the radio and they don't say the name of the song when it's finished and you have no idea what the name of it was? Not anymore. The best way to find a song's name is first:

1. Note down any major lyrics (words or phrases that are, ideally, repeated) of the song that you remember from it. It's best if you write some of the lyrics down on a piece of paper or your phone's notepad at the time of the listening.

2. Go to google and type in lyrics, the word, first then a space followed by quotes. What you put in the quotes is any of the major lyrics that you remember from the song. Separate different parts of the lyrics by more quotes.

For example, I'm going to look for the name of the song, Closing Time by SemiSonic or whatever.

We note down any notable lyrics.

"time to go out to the places you will be from"
"gather up your jackets"
"i know who i want to take me home"

Next, google. We'll just use two parts of our gathered lyrics.

Exact search terms: lyrics "gather up your jackets" "i know who i want to take me home"

Boom, first search result tells you exactly what the song is.

Happy findings.

Welcome to my life.

I got a new office mate a few months ago. She has an iPod with over 2K tracks. Not quite pbSaurus territory, but still impressive. Her tastes generally gravitate towards R&B, but she has a little bit of everything else on there. We're up to like 1326 or something. At first it was strictly alphabetical, but some kind of disruption occurred, and we're on some sort of random path now. I have no fucking idea how iPods work, but they appear to be impossible to control. Anyway, rather than constantly interrupt my office mate with fatuous questions like "who is this?",  I have employed Arnox' maneuver hundreds of time. I must say, the R&B world is as wide as it is deep.

I am eternally grateful that she introduced me to, among many, Macy (http://"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Iez2EjZFdE") ... Gray (http://"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Id5HZZTP13s#noexternalembed") ... and, especially, GSH (http://"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xtzlFO19m3k"). I don't know how I managed to be ignorant of Mr. Heron (http://"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_b2F-XX0Ol0") all these years. My only excuse is that I was behind the Iron Curtain when he was most active (http://"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x52xIaVPtdw"). But still, how could I have missed this (http://"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1qoalKUt0mo")?

And also this (http://"http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=olOYynQ-_Hw"). <---This guy is so far ahead of his time, our children's children will be pondering his groove.

Thank you, office mate.

And I really wish Youtube links would quit turning out as "no embed" links only when I try to post a vid. I thought I figured it out (use the browser url instead of the Share url); but it only posted the video once. The next one was just a link.

Also, its not just the HD ones that do that. They seem to ALL post as links for me; except every now and then. I even tried xolik's idea of putting the link inside " "  but that doesn't work for me either.

That's pretty much what I do whenever I hear a song I'd like to identify.  I make a note of whatever lyrics I can and go a-Googling for it.  Prior to the Internet, I had to just wallow in "I Can't Figure It Out" land.

Ah, John Coltrane.  His awesomeness is indescribable.

If I have my phone with me (iPhone), I just use the Shazam app.

Turn on the app, select 'tag now', let the app listen to 30 seconds of the song and Bam! Name, artist and album.

By the way, the "" thing has worked for the videos I've posted here.

I have a lot of stuff that isn't in gracenotes database so YMMV

The easiest way is the way my wife incorporates.  She justs asks me.

Honestly, I haven't used it that extensively. Most of the time I just use it to remind me later about music to buy / download even though I may know the Artist / Song at the time.

so YMMV
