Well if you don't know, and don't want to phone to find out, just ask your neighbours what their download speeds are. If they have no idea send them to a speed tester, there are quite a few out there. Whichever has the best speed would be the one I picked. Oh and depending on which ISP you get cable/dsl through, I can probably tell you what your local network looks like.

Yeah, these sort of things sound GREAT to lawmakers and such, until they realize that you cannot destroy a computer remotely :)

Pardon? Sadly I would have to disagree with that statement. Though it is much harder to do, and the people who cause the infringement in the first place would have failsafes, it is not impossible. It's plausibility is based solely off of how pissed/determined and skilled they are. Don't forget that all of the hardware in your PC behaves as the software tells it to...

lets see if I got this right before I respond and look like a dumbass....

You want to have your keyboard I/O send direct output information (base code) to a log file, and then have a function to auto convert that code to english text?

Do you want your I/O to still output the commands (keystrokes) to other places (such as a text document or a password field)? Or do you only want to have the keystroke information sent to this log file?

If you are doing this to be able to decode passwords I would think of easier methods, but for some reason I do not think that is the intention. Well I need a bit of clarity before I can attempt to help. But you could always intentionally download a key logger, modify its base code, and disconnect your PC from the internet (if you use it for secure crap) while doing this, to ensure your keystrokes/private info are not sent to people you don't want them sent to.

If thats not suitable though, just respond to the above and I will see if I can think of something for you. I am not a pro 'drake user, but I think my roomate might be, he is a linux whore.

Hardware, Software, and Other Imperialist Crap / DVD writers
« on: June 25, 2003, 08:03:49 PM »
I am new to dvd writers, and I am looking for one that burns both -r and  +r disks. I think I have already picked out the software I am going to buy ,alchohol 120% or recordnow max. I thought that if a dvd rw drive can do +r media it can do -r media as well, but someone told me that was not so. Anyone have a suggestion on a dvd writer that is capable of both?

Hardware, Software, and Other Imperialist Crap / HTTPS and Proxy

I am by far not the most smart person, shit I am not even half smart, but I would say it is for encryption only. It would be strange to me if it stripped away the proxy, because the proxy could be hosted internally on a private network, and the website would have no ability to remove it. As for obtaining your real IP address, well I would use the same argument, at work my IP is private, we only have like 6 public IP adresses for the entire buidling, so while it might recieve a public IP, it would be an entry IP only which would be useless for finding my personal IP. I say it is for encryption only, out of the options given. It uses a different port and encrypts the data, 128 bit cypher strength being the standard for north america, I believe that Europe is 64 bit, but the major companies/sites there also use 128. Why do you want to know this?

Does the 5000g cover a one time get out of jail free card?

I mean what are the perks for giving you my 5000g? I had to kill like 30 rats for that, and rats give crappy exp.

If you decide to get rid of AOL you either are going to want to find some 3rd party software to have all of their registry keys removed or you are going to want to format your box. AOL is a bitch, even when you uninstall it, it will NEVER uninstall its own registry keys. Those keys edit some of the base browsing files and more often than not cause complications when you use a different ISP.

As for DSL vs Cable, it depends WHERE you live. If you live in a big city, I suggest you phone up your local cable company and tell them what street you live on, then ask for the users on the node, if you node has 150 or less, its time to sign up, if it has 20 or less (and yes I know of 3 of these in the US) I am moving to your town, and I will be your new neighbour. The reason is that cable is of course a shared internet connection. The majority of the ISPs I deal with set a bandwidth for the node, and a limit for the modem. So you will recieve almost always your max modem speed (usually 1500 kbps) If you have over 150 people on your node, you will notice a great decrease in speed at t=prime times (right after school and around 5-8pm everyday) this is a huge pain in the ass for gaming, and when you are downloading large files. (you can watch tv *any channel* surf, and talk on ANY phone at the same time)

DSL - This is based on how close you are to the local dispatch (phone company), or their closest node & repeater. If you are more than 3-4 blocks from one, dont even bother. But if you are a block or two away, ask your neighbour what thier speed is, yours will be almost identical. Also DSL almost NEVER varies in speed, so if your download is 850 kbps then that is what it always is, no matter the time of day, or how many people are on. The uploads are total crap though (supposed to be set to 128 kbps, so bitch if you are not getting it). The largest downer to DSL comes in the support and compatability. DSL requires line filters, these are crap. They make your tech support experience hell. Other than that, if you are using a cordless phone, or anything else that uses 240khz(kilohertz) - 1.5mhz (megahertz)you can drop your internet connection (which is a MAJOR pain in the ass during a game or a large DL cause your sister/brother/mom/dad/friend wanted to make a call). Please note that while it is possible to be dropped off line due to that, it does not happen everytime, and many subscribers go their entire life (well the time they are subscribed) without experiencing it. The last limitation of DSL is in the cable length. The telephone should not be longer than 8' (as per the ISP) beyond that they will not support the cable, because they can not garuntee the functionality of it. Whereas coax (for cable connections) can be like 28'. Of course either can be supplemented by ethernet cable.

Oh and DSL ranges stated before were downstream only the upstream range is 25khz (kilohertz) - 160khz (kilohertz).

The errors cause from mobile phones generally only occur if you have a 2.2ghz or higher mobile phone in the house though. Due to the strength of the signal they put out.

As for your last vendor, I can not comment because I have no idea who the hell they are. But if you really want I can look into it and give you all the dirty information.

Hardware, Software, and Other Imperialist Crap / Switch to Linux?
« on: June 24, 2003, 03:59:56 PM »
I have a question about linux vs Windows.. (damn bad topic to start on as a forum noob)

I already have a windows gaming box, but I want to start sharing dvd's with friends. We all own craploads of them, and have a good diversity between us, so I think it would be cool to just share everyone's copies with the rest fo the gang (its like 6 people). This brought me to the conclusion of setting up virtual drives with the images of the dvds on my hdd. I wanted to make a new PC, so this is just a damn good excuse. I will be using alcohol 120% for the copies (unless somone knows better software). Now which OS would suit me better for this? The computer, including all hdds will be just for virtual drives filled with dvd images. I have never used linux before, but I am not a strong windows fan, so I thought maybe I should try out linux. Would linux (something like mandrake or another prebake i can buy) be better suited for this task, or does it not matter at all?

I would also like minimal space consumed by the OS so that I may have more room for dvd images. But I am unsure what a linux install takes for space. Any thoughts/opinions?

btw I like your forums, they have some really awesome information in them.
