Just started reading Orcs by Stan Nicholls

It's a collection of short stories that were written and formerly in print in the late 90's I think.  Only a few chapters in but so far pretty good.

I played it briefly on a friends PS3.  It was pretty.

I like fighting games and the SC series have been the best but there didn't seem to be much change besides the graphics improvement.

Just finished reading The Runes of the Earth and Fatal Revenant by Stephen R. Donaldson.  They are the first two in a trilogy that follows two previous trilogies.

I really enjoyed them, little dramatic and fatalistic at times but he's a great author for using words that make me go "huh" and then have to look them up.  That doesn't happen often with me.

I sullied myself to visit Circuit city last night with the wife and check out the HP tx2500.  I like buying online but for big ticket items I liked to have handled something like it first.  The model at Circuit City was not the touchscreen tablet version but we liked the size and weight so I just ordered it from HP.com.  I found an online coupon that saved me nearly $400 so I got it with the fastest processor, free ram upgrade and larger HDD with other increases for only 1000 with 2 day shipping.  I'll post here about it when I get it a have a chance to de-crapify it and use it a bit.

Thanks for everyone's input.

I was tempted to go with the Dell for the pimp out factor, plus Dell really does seem to have the most choices available.

However Ivan made a pretty good point, we really are looking for something portable not uber-powerful.  I'm really leaning towards the tx2500z at the moment because it has to be the cheapest tablet I've ever seen.  With the AMD dual core 2 ghz, 3 GB of Ram and 250 HDD it was under 1100.  I'm looking at some reviews for it now.

Plus I don't mind running Windows on it, for the moment anyway.  I do computer stuff at work, at home I just want it to work.

After some comparison shopping the HP's look to be the best bargain.

Ivan, which model do you have.  we are looking at the dv4t and the tx2500z (which has to be the cheapest touch screen model I've seen)

Off to find some customer reviews....

Might I add that it's important to find something that is pratical to carry around with you. This might be a no-brainer but there are plenty of laptops out there that I wouldn't really want to carry around with my because of their size and weight. I'm not saying spend $2000 on a Mac Book Air, but something that is as large as a 3 or 5 subject notebook and weighs about a pound or two is probably a good guide line to go by when in the market for a new laptop. Generally speaking, the laptops from Dell that are marked as being "media friendly" aren't good for traveling around as they're too bulky.

I've used the Macs here at work and wouldn't buy one.  Just don't like using em.

The HP's Ivan mentioned and the Dell Demo mentioned are both around 5 pounds, little under mostly.  I had a Toshiba which was great until all the ports decided they just weren't going to work anymore.  I used to love the thinkpads but I'm leary of the quality now that it's Lenovo.

Maybe I'll try to find a consumer reports comparison.....

When you say travel oriented, do you mean just for checking emails/internets while on the road?  It wouldn't take a lot of money for something like that.

That, and downloading and organizing the photo's taken while traveling.  Being able to run Office and such like to do some work at home wouldn't be a bad thing either.

Mostly what you said, light weight and durable are the biggest things.

Yapping Marmosets Move Vigorously?

I haven't been a fan of Dell laptops here at work but I will check it out.

I am about to enter the market for a new laptop and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for websites with good reviews/pricing.

Or if you just plain have a suggestion that works also.

Looking for something travel oriented and not Mac.

I miss the good old days of my 486 and doing marathon DOOM sessions.

When I was in college i had a job scanning engineering size schematics during second shift.  They took about a 1/2 hour each to scan.  I had another PC and played Wolfenstein 3D all the damn time after everyone else left at 5pm.  Good times

I heard he was on the long list.
I thought I was the only one he sent those photos to....

I've been experimenting in google maps and have no idea of the region.  But google tells me to go north through Massachusetts, then west to Cortland.  The estimated drive time is between 6-7 hours.  I also mapped out a route which takes us west through Conneticutt and then north to Cortland.

Which would those of you in the know recommend?  Are there any good places to stop along either route (for dining, Ian running around, must see tourist traps, etc.)?

Any help would be appreciated.  The drive will occur probably late morning a week from Thursday.

I'm betting that the North to Mass would be to pick up the Mass Pike (90 West) whereas the west route would take you on 95 South correct?

The Mass pike is a good road for going 75 and not getting noticed, if you come from RI up 95 N to 146 N to the Mass Pike you should pick it up well away from the really bad traffic parts.  It is a toll road (a couple of bucks from the points I mentioned)
The thing is you'll spend about an hour going North from where you are staying to get the pike.  Seems kind of odd but I'm not sure what roads you'll be picking up in NY.

If you take 95S through Conn, be prepared for bad traffic near Hartford and NY Border and pretty bad road conditions.  Plus Connecticut State troopers love to pull over out of state plates for going 5 mile over the limit.  No tolls.  As the Crow flies this seems more direct since you will not be that far from 95.

Edit:  I just Googled Cortland and the Mass Pike would be the way to go.  You can either take 90 all the way to the Finger Lakes and then go South to Cortland, or take 90 to 88 to 81 North and come up that way.  I was just out that way a couple of weekends ago.  I still have the AAA trip ticket if you want it.  Howe's Caverns off of 88 was kind of cool.

Yep, we fly out next Friday (8/15) on the redeye.  I'm catching the redeye to JFK in about an hour or so and then to one of the mid-atlantic states this weekend for a quickie.  I'll pm you next week when hopefully I'll have a little bit of an itinerary.

Coolie, only problem is I'm leaving the State for the weekend to visit my in-laws in Maine.  PM me your schedule when you can and I hope we can cross paths.

Yeah, Detta didn't show, but I had a blast at the reception anyway.

Well actually the wedding was beautiful as was the bride.  I got a few crappy pictures, sorry about the quality, they really don't do her justice.  The part about not liking to be the star of the show, well she's a natural, not just a star but an ultramegasuperstupendousnova.  I had a great time and spent a lot of time with another good friend :tal: and was really appreciative that I got to spend a little time with Detta and her new spouse.  Well worth all the time I spent in airports and airplanes.

Looked like a beautiful event, a gorgeous dress and the cake did look tasty.  The bride trumps it all of course.

Congrats Mrs Enrique!

I enjoy watching MMA fights when I catch them.  The Tapout guys kind of annoy me, usually still watch it if I flick past the channel and see it on.

Time for the semi-annual defrag! Fire up the disk defragmenter utility and get told "Hey, you should defrag this drive." Ok, go for it. About twenty minutes later I get the "All done!" notice. So I reanalyze the drive I just defragged and get told "Hey, you should defrag this drive." I JUST DID THAT! Took it about four defrags to get it all nice and blue\green again. One machine down, 150+ more to go. This is gonna be a fun day.

Many years ago before I was in IT the IT Guy where I worked used to run defrags and scan disks to fix just about every problem.  The worst part was that he would sit there and watch them.  The entire time.  I can't stand waiting for a program to install so I have no idea how he could handle it.  Course he wasn't very good which I guess would be part of it.

At the local Stop and Shop they've been selling this stuff Simply Limeade and Simply Lemonade.  I've found they make great mixers because they aren't too sweet.  The normal whiskey sour or margarita mixers are way too sweet for me.

Just to keep this thread alive somewhat

This summer I started drinking Dark and Stormy
Pretty refreshing stuff, I usually add a lime wedge.

Also found Cold River Vodka which is fantastic stuff, lime wedge and a couple of ice cubes and you're fine

Other than that I've been drinking mostly wine this year.  Just came back from a wine festival in the New York finger lakes region with 9 cases from various wineries.
