More Linux crap: Fluxbox
« on: January 21, 2004, 11:06:46 AM »

So, do any of you guys use Fluxbox (site)?

I've been messing around with it more lately.  It's quick like Blackbox and Windowmaker, and once you figure out how to customize menus it's pretty easy to use.

I don't have any screenshots yet, but there isn't much to look at anyway... I like it pretty barebones.

My desktop under Fluxbox looks about as exciting as this one (screenshot from the Fluxbox site):  clicky

My brother has been using Fluxbox recenty. I believe I remember him ranting about how fast it is, especiallly since he has a dual XP 1700 (OCed to 2400s) system with a 10k RPM SCSI drive.

Thinking about it now, I don't know why the hell I just made that reply. It's like one of those "Does anyone know where to buy a good used car in New Jersey?" questions and someone replies with, "No, do you?".

Lol.

That wasn't a bad reply.  I'm not looking for help or anything... I just wanted to know if anybody else has used it, because I think it's pretty cool.

So what's your brother do?  Does techie guru-ness run in the fambly?

Currently, I believe he is majoring in telecommunications. I'm quite sure he changed from a computer science major to that. It's just really my brother and I that are the computer nerd types, other than that, the rest of them are your average folk.

My brother and I in nerdy enough that if we have work done on the house, we're going to have a closet of some sort devoted just for servers, and wire most of the rooms with cat5 cable.

Sweet.  That's the way to do it.

My wife and I are pretty high-tech compared to most normal people I know.  Our office at home contains a fax machine, three printers, two scanners, seven computers, a wireless router with a cable connection, and everything's networked and running everything from MS-DOS to Windows 2000, Mac OS9, Slackware Linux, and Mac OS-X.

I have no idea how "normal" people function in the technology world.

Yeah!  I SO don't get that.

And what's this "dialup" thing everybody keeps talking about?

Surely they can't mean internet over phone lines... does that even work?

Apparently, some people shut their PCs off.  How is that supposed to work?  The only time one of my computers ever goes off is if it's dead or if I'm adding new hardware.  Aren't they built to be left on?  :?:

when I lived with my mother she use to make me turn off my computers at night when I was sleeping or during the day when I was away for most of the day.

She couldn't understand why it infuriated me that she required me to do this.

I still can't figure out why she made me do it. Not like we needed to save on the energy bill.

Oh yeah.

HERE is a screenshot of my desktop in Fluxbox, as promised.

I've figured out how to alter themes/styles for it now too.  Pretty slick.

I've got a Mandrake box, but it's a pain in the ass sometimes.  Won't recognize my soundcard or new RAM.  KDE is nice, though, and I'd probably stick with that if I could get the damned hardware to work.

Just remember, technology struggles have their rewards, just like most struggles in life do:  those which do not kill you make you stronger.

If my early Linux configurations had gone 100% smoothly, I would never have learned a thing.

On the other hand, if the first time I ever wanked hadn't been fantastic I probably wouldn't do it four times a day  :?
