Linkage

A civil liberties board with independent investigative powers is a nice start, but I'm skeptical that it would be effective in today's ridiculously overpowered, overfed, and over-everything government.

But at least it's not the half-assed slap in the face attempt the White House made.

Yeah.  Too bad they included it as part of a monster bill that will never pass.

They should throw each strand of spagetti against the wall one at a time rather than throwing the whole pot.

Yeah, that's the other problem.  With this, or any other thing like it.

Politicians can point at it and say "See?  We really care about civil liberties!  We tried to pass a bill to create an entity to protect them!".

Whether it passes or not.

If it doesn't, they can just point at other politicians and say "So-and-so voted against it.  He/she is a baaaaaad person."

Even though the rest of the bill is shit anyway.

It's the nature of governments to restrict liberties.  Happens with the best of intentions, happens with the worst.  I don't know that party affiliation has much to do with it.

Let's hear it for States' rights!

:)  Good to see you too, old friend.  I started to stay clear of the Political Forum, too many hard headed people around.  :P  ...but I feel that it's every person's right to be misunderstood.
