What's your connection to the geek world?
« on: June 30, 2005, 07:00:57 AM »

I am just curious what different areas of technology you guys participate in.  I have my own computer consulting business in which I go to peoples houses and place of business and work on their computers.  (Upgrade, repair, network, etc...)  And I have always been fascinated with all kinds of technology.  I remember playing games on my friends moms computer back in the 80's when floppies were actually floppy. :D

At work, I do business analisys stuff, manage websites and administer databases and various programs. I've done programing but I don't like it so I don't really do it anymore (unless you want to call transact SQL programing, which I'm heavilly involved in). I'm currently working on delegating all that technology related stuff and working on something completly different and non technology related. Well, the hand on parts anyway. I still maintain a role of overseeing technology, planning, writing policies, guidelines and business processes.

At home I build and maintaion PCs. I play games. Also, I use and alarm clock. Sometimes.

Building and maintaining PC's is one of my favourite things to do.  My only problem is that once I've built one and had time to tweak it to my satisfaction I want to build another.  And unless I sell it I can't afford to do that over and over.  So sometimes I like taking some of my customers old PC's that they give me and swapping parts for different setups.  I actually enjoy working on older machines just because it's more of a challenge.
By the way, what games are you currently playing?

Since my computer isn't exatclly up to speed for gaming, I tend to play games that are at least 6 months old, and sometimes a few years old. I'm currently playing Thief 3 and GTA Vice City.

I hear you there.  I was playing the original Unreal Tournament last night on my laptop.  I think I baught that game back in '99 or 2000.   But it's still a blast to play.  I have UT 2003 and 2004 but sold my gaming system earlier this year for needed cash.  Maybe before too long I will re-invest. :D

When you say tutoring do you mean specifically computer related things?  Any areas of specialty or more the basics like MS Office stuff?

While I probably could tutor in MS and all that other fun stuff, in this case I mean basic stuff like Math and Science, maybe some English and History, but the two kids I have so far, starting next week, are in the 8th and 9th grade.

Any ideas what I should charge them?

Well, assuming their parents are paying I would say something like $15 to $20 per hour.  But that's just a shot in the dark.

doomtroll, you have until 11pmCST today (7/1) to change that avatar before I pick one for you. It's just obscenely large.

Edit: Fuck waiting. I've removed your avatar. Try to keep your next selection to around 100x100.

I must admit, I'm only a gamer...but I *love* gaming. Basically...anything I do on top of gaming is because of gaming. Rebuilding systems? Yeah...for better gaming. Entering the bowels of my system to find out Weird Tingly Feeling is going on? Yeah...that's because a game won't run. Figuring out a ^()!^@$ network? Online gaming.

I know what my system runs because I have to...for gaming.

I'm so backwards...

I don't even have, nor could I get, a career in any computer industry. Unless someone wanted to pay me to sit on my @ss, play MP3s, and camp mobs? There's no job available.

I'm such a hack. I know just enough of everything to make me dangerous. Just enough HTML. Just enough javascript. Just enough webpage design and graphics arts. I can shop online for what I need for my system and install it, but can't keep up on the latest and greatest.  I'm a jack of all computer trades, master of absolutely NONE.

I can get my kids on the net and keep them OFF it. I wish I had time for more, I just don't. That's what I'm raising kids for...so they can fix my shit when I'm old and stupid.

Who wants an allowance??? Build mom a webpage! Yeah...that'll be the life ;)

I like gaming but I find myself getting more into tweaking my hardware and running benchmarks to try and top my last score.  I like to see how far I can push my hardware before it's too far.  I end up using the latest games to just test my systems more then to just play the games.  But don't get me wrong, I love a good 'Deathmatch' as much as the next geek. :D

Yeah...  Well we'll believe that when she tells us.  Like everyone wouldn't want to be her boyfriend.

Well maybe not Xolik.
