I clearly don't know how wireless internet works.

The school gave me a laptop.  The internet works when I'm at school.

I just brought it home...where I have wireless internet set up.  I turned it on and it said that it detected a connection.  I told it to connect and it said that it did.  But when I open up IE, it doesn't find any webpages.

What am I missing?

Do you have a WEP key you need to enter to get to your home network?

The school connection may be using a proxy. That would be set up in IE, I think.

You should have separate connections for school and home. If IE is set up to use a proxy, rather than change the settings back and forth, you should download firefox for use at home.

Or it may be something entirely different.

I would bet her laptop is locked down so that she can't download other programs like firefox.  My unsophisticated work was able to do that so a vast public organization such as a school district probably does too.  In that case they might not allow outside networks either.

You should talk to your IT guy and find out how to set it up for your home network and then how to set it up for any other network that you might use, like a local cafe or something that offers free wireless.  Explain that your access is solely work related because you take a lot of your work home.

Yep.

That's actually something that's part of my new job.

Give me 10 minutes and someone's workstation and I can tell you all kinds of things about their web surfing habits, even IF they clean up after themselves.

Hmmm.  I stopped by BC a time or two.  I have to make sure I don't do that.  Maybe I shouldn't even come here during the day either.  At least until I get a contract for next year.  I don't know if they'd be uptight about it or not.

Yeah, and if they clear their history and stuff off the computer too I would bet.

It was the proxy thing.  I'm on at home now.  Sweeet!

Thanks guys!

Hey Demo, if I do what you said where I put firefox on my data stick and use that to surf, can they tell what sites I go to then?  From home (using their computer)?

I don't go to racey sites.  But you know the ones that would send up an unneccessary red flag for them.

No, as long as you surf on it from home and not on their network (where they can check firewall logs).  Put this on your little USB drive and run that instead of a locally installed browser and you're essentially in the clear.

The first link didn't work, but I read it (portable firefox) and went and got it myself. :)  I didn't previously know there was a portable version.
