Problem with net connection. can ne1 help?

i have had my pc for about 4 months n it as worked ok so far n now it aint workin!!! i tried everythin i can fink of such as updatin driver, unpluggin modem 4 a day, and god nos wat else. it works on me downstairs pc n wen i ping on dos it works. r there ne viruses, spyware etc. that can disable a connection for ie, firefox, msn n all d other programs that access d net?

i run on win xp, sp2, 4Mb cable modem connexion wi ethernet cable

I understand that going to a dos prompt and typing format C: and then Y at the prompt can help fix a lot of networking problems.
