Cool Tools
« on: January 12, 2007, 09:38:02 AM »

My choice for a cool tool today is the Irwin Vise-Grip Quick Adjusting Pipe Wrench

There are several gimmicky pipe wrenches out there, but in my experience the Irwin is the best. I was very skeptical the first time I got my hands on one. It is a lot different from a standard pipe wrench: you adjust the teeth rather than the jaw, and the jaw pivots out for quick catch and release. If you are used to a standard pipe wrench it can take some time to get used to the Irwin.

After using it for a while, it is now my first choice in a pipe wrench. Now if only they made larger sizes…

I just might have to try one of those.  I have an array of different pipe wrenches, and I probably do more swearing at the wrenches themselves than any other element of home plumbing tasks.

I really have never used a pipe wrench in my time.

However, my nomination of a cool tool would have to be this guy. I can't tell you how much time it's saved me over the years. It's a good tool for the true geek.

Yeah the automatic wire stripper is awesome, I was introduced to it's use by a mechanic I worked with who ended up going to jail for cocaine...all the time I worked with him I figured it was the wire stripper that he was protecting with his huge toolbox...

This week my favourites are my laser pointer and air horn (I need a rechargable one though, this single use one is going to make me poor at the rate I use it).

My nomination is this little thing that stamps letters onto plastic strips you can stick places, sort of like a badass label maker. I'm going to buy one this week and it should be awesome.

I need an excuse to start buying tools.  I've never needed anything other than a screwdriver set, wire stripper, plyers, hammer....but then again, I'm not a homeowner, either.

That wrench is fugging cool.

While on the subject of tools, check out here for some good prices on tools. The quality seems to be pretty good, too. My brother has bought several hundred dollars worth of tools from them all without problems.

I’m a big fan of Harbor Freight! One good example of why I like them is this 18” ratcheting bar clamp on sale for only $4.49!. I have a couple of them, and they work great! They have some of the best sales.

I have one of those stores near my house.  I've purchased many things from them.  Word of caution, though; don't buy electrical equipment from them.

I too have a harbor freight not far away.  I've purchased quite a few tools from them.  Mostly air tools.

And I'll agree on the great sales part.

As far as electrical stuff,  I'll agree with Biz.  For the most part their electric tools don't look very well built.  But......  With the prices you might pay for some of them they could be decent throw aways.  For something you'll only use once in a blue moon.

I hate going there though.  The lines are usually long.  The service is almost nonexistant.  And I want to wander down too many isles seeing what's in there.  :-D

Oh and
 http://www.smartshoppersinc.com/
is in my neighborhood also.  I used to shop there from time to time but since they went internet it costs me more to walk in and buy than those of you ordering online.

Screw that for my part.

But there are lots and lots of people who are happy online shoppers.

Just got a Tanaka gas powered drill! It is used, older model, but in excellent condition. No more lugging around 200' of extension cord to use the Bosch. Plus, with the auger bit it came with, I can drill 6-inch post holes in a matter of seconds. It is going to save a a ton of time putting up fences and planting things. Best of all, it was cheap.

6 inch auger bit?  Kick ass.  Last time we did a big fence job, we rented a two man auger.
