I heard that even after some major close quarters combat situations, many soldiers failed to ever fire a round.  It takes a bit of je ne sais quoi to pull that trigger knowing that you're taking a life.

All that is, apparently, beside the point. According to the above argument, as I understand it, people even join the police to kill.

Well, in the Gospell according to the Prophet ARLO, in the First Book of Alices Restaurant,  Verse XIV
we read:

Quote
And I went up there, I said, "Shrink, I want to kill.  I mean, I wanna, I
wanna kill.  Kill.  I wanna, I wanna see, I wanna see blood and gore and
guts and veins in my teeth.  Eat dead burnt bodies. I mean kill, Kill,
KILL, KILL."  And I started jumpin up and down yelling, "KILL, KILL," and
he started jumpin up and down with me and we was both jumping up and down
yelling, "KILL, KILL."  And the sargent came over, pinned a medal on me,
sent me down the hall, said, "You're our boy."

Evidently there is some basis for validation of that belief.

Waaay back after Pearl Harbor the US Government had a huge racist propaganda campaign against the hated Japanese, and inspired many people to crave violent revenge by enlisting.

I said nothing about why people join the military, or why they join the police, and I really am confused as to why you think so. Seriously, no sarcasm flag. Is this just an off-topic discussion?

V, as 12 so accurately guessed, that would fall under profit. (Again, the benefit is not being killed)

I heard the kid responsible for the Virginia Tech murder was severely mentally unstable.  He'd been in a mental institution before, and in my opinion, that should pretty much explain everything.  It wasn't a sane kid making an insane decision.  And IIRC, he was also a creative writing major and wrote very disturbing pieces about murder.  I wonder why didn't his professors step up and say something?

Either way, I'm really annoyed at the aftermath.  My university has been closed twice now because of graffiti from students saying, "If you thought Virginia Tech was bad, you wait until 8:00pm."  It happened a third time and they just closed off the bathroom that it was written in.

I feel sorry for everyone involved.

If professors were to "step up and say something" every time a student wrote something that was creepy, we'd never have the likes of Stephen King.

There has been a lot of people talking about why no one did anything when that kid was "obviously" crazy.

Obvious because he didn't talk much.
Obvious because he avoided eye contact.
Obvious because he sometimes signed attendance sheets in a non-conformist way.
Obvious because he wrote dark stories.

None of those things are indicators of insanity. So he wasn't an outgoing person. I'm not either and I've never killed anyone. So he wrote creepy, violent stories. I've been known to write some really dark, violent stuff and I've never killed anyone. I think it was inappropriate for his creative writing professor to decide that he might have mental health issues because of his writings.

Now the real problem indicators were the stalking accusations, and something was done about that.

There is a difference between creepy and violent and just plain insane.  Stephen King barely touches the icing.  I'm a creative writing major as well, and I've had a professor invite a psychologist into class because she was concerned about student welfare.  Professors should be aware of those sorts of things or at least ask questions.  You don't have to diagnose the kid, but definitely seeing if he's okay and discussing it with the faculty doesn't hurt.

Yes. Mass murderers often are.

I havent had much time to follow the story about the shooting, just bits and pieces but I was told he did it because of some woman and I was wondering if that was true.

Oh and as far as joining the Army so I could kill people well thats note why I went in. I wanted to go to college, but it gets so boring shooting at non-moving plastic targets, and the pressure of the job you have no matter what it is can get to some people but not all.

Great, another Evonus.

I am a very, very, very busy man. I work long hours, maintain a household, and help raise a teenager. I haven't had more than a half-hour or two to myself on a typical day in years. And yet, I know everything that is publicly known about the VA shooting. And not just that incident, but many, many more topical stories of the day. Why? I read a newspaper. I read Yahoo news headline stories. I look in on Drudge. I peruse Fark. I look in on HuffPo. I check out Digg. I peek in on SlashDot. Somewhere along the way, I get informed, and STILL manage to get things done.

The VA Tech shootist did not do what he did because of some woman.

Who are these people who told you that?
