What is "Google" on a mac?
« on: December 01, 2007, 08:21:10 AM »

 :-D

Just got me my new laptop...  NIB
Apple Macbook Pro-2.4GHz
4GB Ram
160G hdd@7200RPM
17" Hi-Resolution Mon
Tiger
Buncha other progs... Final Cut Studio, Adobe CS3, Office and Toast 8
Right around $3k on Ebay

I just got so damn tired of having to dick around with my XPHome laptop EVERY FUCKING TIME I tried to use anything on it. It was perpetually hosed; but never had the courtesy to let you know it was indeed hosed. Then, periodically, it would wake up and execute all the commands you entered before you realized it was hosed; all at once- unless one of those commands caused it to hang again...
Then (I never could figure this out) - I would play mp3s on Winamp2.8 , with nothing else running, and it would STILL have dropouts. AMD 64 Turion, 2g DDR, ...although the hdd is only 5400rpms, it still shouldn't be dropping out. Even playing it in an editor, or a resource hog player... but this was just winamp..
Anyway, I've never heard as much crap or as many issues on Apple's end; so I'm gonna try it out.

I sold my soul, too. Managed to crash it, too. I guess I'm special.

The last time I tried replying to this thread, this site stopped responding, so I'll be careful and fast (aside from this sentence which is wasting a lot of time with explanation):

One word - Quicksilver.

 HAHA!
[Ed. Note: Actually, Roman mythological texts are remarkably silent on whether Mercury could be summoned with a key stroke, but it would have been great if he could. Quicksilver will certainly make you feel as if you have god-like powers.]

 I'm sold!

Thanks for that linky...   8-)

Have you ever owned a mac?  If not, welcome to the apple family! :-)

Nope. LadyGendom had one when we were together, but I never really used it- it was hers. I only set up the networking between the mac and win boxes, and probably started iTunes once or twice, lol. I've been around them, and have only heard good or better things. I know also they marketed initially to the professional industry (video/film/audio/photo editing, etc); a beginning with professionals who would absolutely NOT put up with crap crashing and hosing and running exceeeEEEeeding slOOooow - as opposed to home users; who initially knew NOTHING about computers, and so were willing to accept Microsoft's stumbling along.
So - birthed from professional use (Apple); or birthed from ignorant home use (Windows)... no real contest when you think about it.
Thanks for the welcome! If I knew YOU were here I'da bought one YEARS ago...

Video is actually crappy on the Mac unless it's a native file.  If you're DLing mpeg2 muxed files you have to buy additional software to render it and it doesn't convert as well to HD.  But, then why the fuck would Sony use mpeg2 muxed instead of mpeg4 anyway.  Other than that it just takes some getting used to i.e. learning new shortcuts etc., but the stability lack of security flaws more than makes up for it.

Yeah, I mean it's not a flawless machine, but I must say that the year and a half I've had my macbook pro, I've hardly had any problems, I really lucked out.  I had a dell in college (I don't really want to talk about it), so this is way better!  I grew up on Macs but I am definitely not an expert.  Right now I've got it tricked out for Christmas, I heart Shapeshifter!

Huh? VLC has never had a problem with anything I've thrown at it. There's also the whole Quicktime + Perian deal as well.

I myself was actually referring to editing said video/audio; mac has always had winboxes beat. So I've been told/seen/read about.

I meant video editing too.  Editing from .mov to .mov is fine and works great.  But editing .mpeg4 or converting one file type to another just doesn't work well in the Mac environment.

Even "pro" formats? I'm not a video dude, but I always thuoght those (mov, mpeg, wav, ec) were mainly consumer formats (for lack of a better term). Is it the same with .aiff and .avi files? You've obviously tried video editing; so you'd know more about than I. I'd just always heard/read/etc. that major movie studios' video engineers wont touch a pc for their work.
Of course; I've also heard nothing but "latency is the biggest problem" in audio recording on a computer - but I have yet to experience any significant problems at ALL. So... I guess to each his own.

I'm talking consumer editing.  And yes, after I've converted files to .mov, editing is a snap and quality is usually pretty good.  But all of my friends and relatives that have PCs would prefer mpeg4 files and I don't have a converter to go the other way.  There probably is one, but it probably costs a fortune, like most Mac software.

Awesome program, awful site design.

That converts from most anything to most anything.

WHEEEE HEHEEEE HEEEEEE!!!!!
I'm lovin my setup. There is a program on the mac which creates a virtual machine; allowing you to install ANY OS you want. So, ya, I have WinXP Pro running on my macbook. It gets even better. with "Coherence" enabled, it combines the WinXP desktop/files/apps/everything with OSX; all co-existing together peacefully. It literally has the mac Dock at the bottom, with the Windows Taskbar just behind/above it. Click on any app; mac or Win, and it just RUNS. No swapping back and forth or dual booting, or any of that. It is fucking NICE.
I can now have the laptop wireless in the drum room and remote desktop to my main Studio comp in the Main Room where the recording app is. Ffffffkyeh!

On another note; I got my 60" HD Plasma mounted on the wall above and behind the mixing board; and have my Media/Internet pc on it. Pics soon...   : )

VMWare works well for that too, plus it's free.  That's what I use to run a virtual Windows box on my Slackware machines.  Good for playing old video games like Sid Meier's "Alpha Centauri" or Diablo II.   8-)

Hmm...   Let's see...  linux installed on a macbook pro with a virtual WinXP machine and another running OS X (what an insult, hehe), lol. For free.

I like it.
