Burn-in on your plasma
« on: January 16, 2008, 06:29:57 PM »

Holy crap, people. I'm sure you all already know about burn-in (images permanently visible on your screen); but in case anyone didn't realize how fricken FAST it happens; I'm here to say, "Fast."  I have had this new Pioneer 60" HD Plasma flat screen for about a month; I have CATV and this pc hooked up to it. I also have the CATV going to my video card. Normally, I use the PC channel on the TV, as that gives me access simultaneously to the comp, and the Cable TV; plus I can use the DVR on the comp.
Since my comp's desktop taskbar was the most common thing visible, it burned in on the plasma screen way faster than I expected it would. I never did leave the TV on with the desktop visible (like I do my computers- I just leave them always on, and no screensaver); it was always on CATV fullscreen, or the TV itself powered off. By leave it, I mean, like, overnight; or if I left the house. Just using the comp regularly showed the taskbar enough to now have burned it in.
So; although it's really fucking cool, I advise all y'all NOT to use your plasma TV for a regular "working" computer monitor. Just use it for games, or stuff like Google Earth; the put it back to TV. Even if it says it's a "monitor".  I don't know Weird Tingly Feeling, but my plasma computer monitors (22") have NO burn-in; thats kinda obsolete - I don't get why the big "monitor" burns images in. Anybody have any idea about that?
At any rate: You hAve BeeN WaRned.

I think plasma is a bit more prone to burn-in.

A coworker of mine who buys and sells a lot of used/refurbished tech equipment on the side got ahold of 4 30" plasma monitors for cheap, and they all had severe burn-in, even though they were pretty new at the time.

I wonder what watching the old spiderman cartoons would do to it then.

Thankfully it's not really bad; hardly noticeable at all. Still. . .   :x

I hate when that happens. I have a Toshiba 42'' HD plasma.

I can never watch MTV2 or any such channel that has their icon in the corner, because that stupid two headed dog will be there for a few days after. I was, however, able to play PlayStation 1 without anything burning in (at least with FFVIII). I wouldn't want to try N64, although I'm itching to play it.

My brother was watching a movie on it one day and left it on pause because, well, he screws things up a lot. It actually went away, I suppose it wasn't paused for too long and I got lucky. Gotta watch out for everything now and even stay away from some things I want to watch / play.

I understand the frustration, I almost murdered my brother because it was the first time it had happened on the TV.

My TV isn't a plasma and is still relatively new, but I have a similar problem with burn-in.  The majority of the time the TV is on, it's on as background noise and usually tuned to USA.  A couple months ago I noticed that the frakking USA logo has burned itself into the lower right corner of the screen.  I'm seriously considering writing them and telling them that.  Then I realize that the letter wouldn't mean shit to them and I go in the corner and pout.

I've been using a 42 inch plasma for as my computer monitor for about a year now and haven't had any burn in. At least, not yet.

See, that's what I don't get. My 22" monitors (plasma as well) have no burn in issues either, and I leave them on with no screensaver. What's the difference besides the size? And why would the size be an issue with burn-in?
I am indeed perplexed.
