Need help! (Please)
« on: May 30, 2008, 11:50:34 AM »

We're having a mini crime wave in my neighborhood.  I've already got a Rottweiler (good for when I'm not home), a security system (also good for when I'm not home), and a couple guns (good for when I'm home).  All of the recent home invasions have happened during the day when I'm at work.  So, I'm looking at putting up some (very visibly placed) security cameras.  The problem is that I know dick about video stuff.  I would really appreciate it if someone knowledgeable could look at the following 3 links and tell me which one is better, and which one is better for the money.

I'm in the process of designing our security cam system where I work.

Out of those choices, I'd go with this one for the money.

I'm with Demo on this one. The one he suggested makes note of the native software features that it comes with. The other ones make almost no mention about it at all. Remote playback via IE or some other web browser is probably one of the best features and will give you the best peace of mind while you're at work since you can check up on your home every now and then to make sure everything is alright.

Although the first package comes with 4 cameras that all have night vision, it doesn't come with any type of base unit which I can imagine will be a pain in the ass if something happens to your computer and you have no video feed.

One issue I have with all of them though is that I'm not clear from the specs on any of them how scalable they are if need be.  That might be a limiting factor to consider if you want to do anything more with the system down the road.

BTW, this is one site from which I've gotten a lot of really great info lately: http://www.discount-security-cameras.net/network_camera.html

That first one definitely has the disadvantage that Chris mentioned. Although if someone does break in and finds the base station for any of the systems you're going to be out of luck. The ability to upload images or video to an off site server would be an asset, but I didn't see any mention of that on any of them.

Another option might be just to get a couple of fake cameras. It sounds like you've already got some deterants, something a bit more visible might be enough.
