50 Flix in 2009
« on: January 01, 2009, 11:59:27 AM »

Just like the book thread.  Every time you watch a movie, add it to your list.  Put your list in a quote box and add to the bottom each time.  Tell us what you thought of the movie.

I think I'll actually make the goal of 50 movies.

(By the way, every new post I make, I go to the last one and click "modify".  Then I copy it all and paste it into my new post and make the updates.  That way I don't have to redo the codes every time.)

1.  Step Brothers (***)

It was so stupidly funny.  I loled, many times.  A bit drawn out and it kind of drives you nuts how fricking loserish they are, but still funny.  I give three stars.

1. Pineapple Express

It was really good - I look forward to seeing Zack and Miri Make a Porno. Seth Rogen is on my top five list of men for whom I would tear myself away from my computer.

My goal would probably be 12 but I'd be happy with 2.  Not much time for this anymore.  Tomorrow will be my first as Sandy and I are going on a movie date.

1.  Step Brothers (***)

2.  The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (***)

Forest Gump with a Twist.  A twist that they don't bother to even attempt to explain.  Brad Pitt was phenomenal and his character was great.  Cate Blanchett's character was just kind of annoying at first and they don't really develop their relationship until after they get together.  I know they were going for immature, but it came off as way worse than that.  The whole thing was a story told in flashbacks from a woman's deathbed.  I can't stand movies that are told in flashback.  I hate the interruptions when they come back to present.  I'm also not sure what Katrina was doing there.

I liked the movie.  It was really good and Brad Pitt deserves big awards.  But as I said, it was very Forest Gump-ish, while not being nearly as good as Forest Gump.  Come to think of it, Forest Gump is probably the one move that I CAN stand being told as a story in flashbacks.

Edit:  I found out that the same guy who wrote the screenplay for Forest Gump also wrote the screenplay for Ben Button.  You can tell.

1. Tales of Despereaux (***)

Awesomely cute, poorly scripted. The narration drove me nuts and they did a really messy job of storyline construction, but I wasn't really expecting anything glorious out of what is, essentially, a kid's film. It is redeemed by it's utter sweetness... I got a cavity from watching it.

1. Haute Tension (**)

After seeing Inside, another French horror flick, I was eager to see this one.  I was disappointed.  It seems like a lot of potential was wasted.

Well babysitter failure prevented a theater gig.  But Sunday night we watched:

Ahh to have time.  Enjoy it while you can missy.

And Detta, while we're at it, how about a thread for 50 Concerts in 2009?

1. Tales of Despereaux (***)
2. I Know Who Killed Me (**)

These people must have bought stock in stage blood. The psychological aspect of what should've been an awesome horror/thriller could not over power bad acting, no matter how much blood they threw on the set. But they get points for the typical horror-movie bad guy who never dies.

3. Babylon AD (****)

It gets an extra star for a half-naked Vin Diesel (because I think he's hot). I liked it, it had a bit of a disappointing ending (it felt unifinished), but it was a well constructed story-line over all and didn't have those awkward script moments so common in post-apocalyptic sci-fis. There were plenty of Coca-cola product placements, but definitely worth watching.

1. Haute Tension (**)

2. Alien Nation (****)

Aside from the whole humanoid-aliens-with-minor-differences thing that seems to bother SF fans so much, it was pretty darned good.  A nice blend of SF and mystery.

Again...not all too sure what Katrina was doing there.  But I guess that would be a discussion for the political forum, not the movie thread.

5. The Family That Preys (****)

A classic Tyler Perry creation and I happen to like Tyler Perry.

6. The City of Ember (***)

Yet another in a long line of "humans destroy planet-cover their asses-get away with it". Not a genre I'm generally a fan of and there were a lot of things that still needed explaining when the movie was over. However, it gets points for creativity and not making my nose bleed. At least it was entertaining for all of its "Save the Planet" subject matter.
